EXERCISE No. 9
CELL DEATH
CASEOUS NECROSIS

PHOTOMICROGRAPHS: Lymph node

Lungs

DIRECTIONS

Study the accompanying photomicrograph of the lymph node and the lung. The areas of
necrosis are the pink-staining areas where no cellular outlines are discernible. Study the
cells around the areas of necrosis. Try to identify the type of cells present.

QUESTIONS:

1. How would you differentiate this type of necrosis from coagulation

necrosis according to its common cause and morphologic appearance?

Coagulation Necrosis Caseous Necrosis

Tuberculous and Fungal
Common Cause Ischemia
Granulomas
Gross: Necrotic tissue appears Gross: Cheese-like, soft and
paler than normal and greasy.

Morphologic Appearance Microscopic: Intensely amorphous and finely
eosinophilic cells with granular.
indistinct or reddish nuclei;

2. What is the usual outcome of these areas of necrosis?

Answer: It may either retain cellular outline (coagulative necrosis) or there will be
complete dissolution (liquefactive necrosis)
