EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This study presents the architectural design mechanism and the theoretical framework
that contributes to the proposed project. It is based on the premise that organized and
assembled architectural knowledge to come up with a more informed and rational design
process; consequently emanating in more adaptive and innovative design conclusions. In the
navigation of international or domestic studies, these concepts in the notion of its context are
reintroduced to further synthesize the crisis for the project.
According to Shahid (2020), the major goal of research is to investigate and comprehend
the ideas that an architect utilized to construct that project and how it functioned. Accordingly,
enhancing these outputs in emerging new proposals with the infusion of novel innovativeness.
The research provides the necessary guidelines in producing a rigorous design for healthcare
facilities. These include the standards, and Parameters under DepEd Guidelines since this
will be built in school, DOH Guidelines, NBCP, Fire Code, Plumbing Code, SanitaryCode,
Water Code, BP 344, Philippine Green BuildingCode, Planning and Design Handbook, &
Time savers. Moreover, giving the recommended Design Principles, Concepts, Strategies, and
Trends. Its case study aims to correlate and contrast the various considerations in building a
good structural design. It provides the; background of the study, its challenges and objectives,
concepts and guiding principles, site planning, space planning, assessment, and
recommendations. Thus, synthesizing with the current study to target incompetency and provide
new solutions.
Furthermore, the given site was also analyzed and accurately studied. This emanated
the contextual and environmental analysis to give in depth detail of the site. This is necessary in
the proper orientation of the site, reducing risks and hazards, and maximizing spaces for the
scope of property. In addition, providing the demographic data for students including their age,
race, and gender in assessing the possible users of the building. Its user analysis also reveals
the organization and its subordinates. As per the behavioral pattern, this clearly indicates the
flow of activity to foster comfort and proper traffic in the clinic. Moreover, the significant
Ergonometrics and Anthropometrics were also gathered to serve as the basis of the interior and
exterior elements.
Maximizing the space is also of great priority. With an in depth detailed programming,
spaces were properly analyzed in accordance to proper relation of rooms. Its bubble diagram
originated from the matrix diagram that showcases the relation of spaces, and rigorously
distributes its proximity and adjacency.
This research will reinforce the proposition in precisely coming up with rigorous and
effective planning. Specifically with mitigating calamities associated with climatic status. The
Philippines is known for its maritime and tropical climate (Department of Science and
Technology, 2022). Moreover, according to Mishra (2015), In the field of architecture,
technology has a significant role to play and it’s a subtle outline with complex convenience.
Therefore, the elementary school must also utilize these advancements, to adapt, manipulate,
and peddle effective academic services. However, natural views and systems are still the top
priorities in creating a welcoming space.
As an initial conclusive summary, the goal of this undertaking is to efficiently incorporate
findings with the design concepts, and structural plan of the pup infirmary. It seeks to mitigate,
adapt, and fulfill deficiencies overlooked by preceding studies. Therefore amplifying current
approaches in the Vernacular architecture of the selected region, utilizing energy conservation,
use of space efficiency, and applying the concept of “state of the art”. Withstanding tropical
repercussions and the philosophy of learning in the use of space. Presenting data, assessing
problems, and proposing results to a successful infirmary design.

BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT

Health care facilities come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from little, relatively
straightforward doctor offices to enormous, expensive teaching and research hospitals. The
many different subsidiary healthcare kinds, which are frequently independent facilities, may be
included in large hospital centers. The Department of Health's (DOH) Guidelines for Hospital
Design serves as the basis for numerous rules and technical specifications that apply to the
design of healthcare facilities in order to guarantee patient safety, comfort, and commitment to
well-being.

In addition to having an effect on the health of the healthcare professionals, the design
of the hospital's internal and external environment also affects how patients heal and behave.
The numerous research that have been conducted in this area in recent years have
demonstrated this. As a result of the findings of these studies, the psychological effects of
environmental factors in healthcare facilities, especially hospitals, are receiving more attention.
The role of the patient in healthcare is also receiving more and more attention.

As a result of the expanding demand for high-quality, reasonably priced, and easily
accessible health care services and in keeping with the Polytechnic University of the
Philippines's (PUP's) aim to serve a wider
The university administration is recommending that the current University Medical Services
Department (MSD) activities be upgraded into a Level 1 University Infirmary/General Hospital to
be situated at NDC Compound, Sta. According to its long-term development strategy, Mesa,
Manila.

As a primary hospital within the country’s first polytechnic university, the proposed
university infirmary aspires to be a model health facility that provides excellent primary care and
diagnostic services including meaningful public health care programs. From its original
mandate of attending to the health needs of students, faculty, and employees only, the
new university hospital will evolve and expand its clientele to also include employees’
dependents as well as the residents of the barangay communities within and near the campus.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The Healthcare facility must comply with the national building code of the Philippines for its
spatial requirements. Its main goal is to give the utmost comfort to the medical system and
possible patients.Its primary objectives include:

I. The use of proper spacing based upon DOH requirements in achieving effective space
planning.
II. It must respond to the needs of the tropical environment, adapt and mitigate the odds of
nature in terms of its structural integrity and systems.
III. Passive design strategies, green building technologies, and other sustainable design
practices and considerations must also be applied for the design process.
IV. To employ state of the art on its interior and pioneers vernacular design approach for its
design.
V. The use of its landscaping for mental healing of patients and its vegetation for open
space activities.
VI. Security is highly considered.

INTERNATIONAL CASE STUDY

A+R Architekten references traditional structures for hospital in Myanmar

According to Astbury (2022),German practice A+R Architekten drew on traditional typologies
and materials for this hospital in the remote village of Magyizin, Myanmar, which has been
shortlisted in the civic building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.

Located atop a hill in an area that is largely inaccessible during the rainy season, the hospital,
developed by German NGO Projekt Burma eV, provides healthcare for around 20 communities
in the area.
For the hospital's design, Stuttgart-based A+R Architekten turned to Myanmar's traditional "brick
nog" structures, which feature a structural timber frame infilled with bricks.

Atop a slim concrete base, this traditional timber frame has been swapped for a concrete one,
which is infilled with red bricks and a series of timber vents and movable shutters to provide
airflow and shelter from the rain.

The new hospital building transforms traditional construction methods into a contemporary
design vocabulary. Taking formal cues from a typical rural house, the hospital's spaces are
organized around a central stone-filled courtyard, which acts as an outdoor waiting area to
minimize the transmission of infections.

A covered walkway leads to a small annexe building, which contains a separate isolation ward
and service spaces beneath a large sloping metal roof.

With an operating theater, delivery room, laboratory and 20 beds, much of the hospital's
equipment was donated by institutions in Germany.A single-storey atrium house was developed
to serve as the main building. Its sheltered inner courtyard is the heart of the building, both a
lounge area and a communal space. The linear side wing with its distinctive mono-pitch roof is
accessed via a pergola, and houses an isolation ward, self-catering kitchen, storage rooms,
washrooms and sanitary facilities
Woven bamboo mats line the tops of the rooms

The timber trusses of the building's roof have been covered with woven bamboo mats to aid air
circulation, and large timber-lined eaves create a shaded perimeter around the entire building.
Most of the materials have been left unfinished, creating a reddy-brown palette that is contrasted
by the doors surrounding the courtyard which have been painted a pale green.

LOCAL CASE STUDY

Baler Hospital (under construction) - located in a rural area of the Philippines with poor
access to comprehensive health services - combines a general hospital and a trauma
center into a single facility that serves regional needs and fortifies emergency response
capabilities. The hospital’s perimeter portico acts as an iconic edge that allows the
different interior functions to be legible from the exterior.

For the project, CAZA developed a specialized structural grid that efficiently
accommodates the exacting spatial requirements of both the hospital and trauma center
programs. The grid is interspersed with garden courtyards that anchor the hospital’s
various departments, maximizing natural lighting and connecting staff and patients with
the landscape. A central spine provides efficient circulation between each of the
departments.
EXPANSION AND ADAPTABILITY

The 9-meter by 9-meter structural grid supports a range of programs and specialized room
layouts, enabling the hospital to adapt as new needs emerge.
COMBINED TRAUMA CENTER AND HOSPITAL

A central circulation path organizes the interior program and allows efficient services and
supplies deliveries to both the trauma center and hospital zones.

"The design imagines both a pragmatic and a futuristic solution to the challenge of such a
specialised and exacting program."

The building, which will be constructed using prefabricated components, is meant to serve as a
model for medical facilities in rural environments.

"Its contextual design can be adapted to other environments through a customised external
presence and public spaces that respond to specific local conditions," - CAZA

Encompassing 6,120 square metres, the centre will contain operating rooms, maternity wards,
an imaging area, a chapel and a cafe. The exterior will be clad in grey stone and a perforated
white material.

L-shaped in plan, the facility will consist of a long bar connected by a covered walkway to a
sculptural volume housing the chapel. Walls sheathed in stone will hold up portions of the roof.
Ample glazing will usher in natural light, while deep overhangs will mitigate solar gain
and shade a portico that wraps the perimeter of the building.

A series of garden courtyards will offer patients the "therapeutic presence of nature".

Designed to accommodate 75 patients on a daily basis, the facility will contain interior
spaces that can be reconfigured.
