jf Comparison to Movie Rain Man (1988)


Movie Plot Synopsis:
Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise), a self-centered businessman from Los Angeles, has just
discovered he has an autistic brother named Raymond (Dustin Hoffman). Their father has
recently died and bequeathed1 $3 million to Raymond’s caretaker. Charlie, who was estranged
from his father, has been cut out of the will2.
Charlie’s business is not going well, and he hopes to get a portion of the inheritance 3 if he
can manage to gain legal custody4 of Raymond. Charlie takes Raymond out of the home
where he has lived nearly all of his life, and the film shows their journey across the country to
Charlie’s home in L.A.
Along the way, Raymond’s autistic behavior first pushes Charlie to the limits of his
patience...and then pulls him completely outside of his self-centered world.
