Urban Living Spaces

Vision is nothing but the human eye’s interpretation of the
refraction of light. Where light touches upon matter, wavelengths

are sent into our pupils, which translate them into tangible objects.
The reality that surrounds us is all about the way we perceive it: our
very eye structures our environment according to what we understand
of it. Humanly, we are bound to seek beauty in the world we inhabit.
This is why Boffi has joined forces with DePadova and MA/U to redraw
the map of home living. Our mission unfolds at the crucial intersection
between objects and our perception of them, in the special, potential
place of a vision about to embody itself into the ideal living space.
Raw, essential materials such as stone, wood and metal are transformed
into precious objects; matter remoulds itself to accommodate the shapes
of human life, to create unique living spaces tailored to the needs
of the people who choose to inhabit them. The publication you are holding
in your hands gathers a handpicked selection of our newest design
solutions, devised in close collaboration by the three brands belonging
to the group: Boffi, DePadova and MA/U. What catches your eye?

White sunlight spills in from the tall windows, early at dawn.
Picture a room in a house while all its inhabitants are still asleep.
The morning bustle is about to kick in, but for a moment still, all is quiet:
a pure linear space, where everything exists in perfect balance, in the
anticipation of human touch. The delicate geometries of the room
arrange themselves in complete silence, preparing to welcome new
PURE
occupants. The cup will be filled with black coffee, a brown biscuit
dunked into white milk. Children will whisper secrets in each other’s ear,
by the house in the corner. Later, legs will stretch out across one of the
sofas, a woman’s elbow will brush another’s. Later still, perhaps,
she will laugh, an electrical spark flying between them like a firefly
crossing the room. None of that’s happened yet. The day is still whole:
for a moment still, all is quiet.

DEVIL’S The devil’s in the detail, they say, and detail beckons the eye
in this minimal, perfectly composed space, drawing it to the chromatic

subtleties of wood meeting metal, leather and mirrors. Unique details
spirit our gaze away, along the hidden curves of this space, tapping out
a tune on the piano-key panels of the kitchen, finally coming to rest
on top of a double pale moon that hangs in the middle of the room.
This is a place of quiet perpendiculars, unpredictable softnesses
reaching out to invite us to rest – silver flints, like pixies, sparking off
DETAIL,
surfaces. On one side, a black quietly ladder ascends to the skies.

“His room was like an explorer’s den, a lair of furs, the cave
of a magician,” writes Anaïs Nin upon entering her new lover’s room,
some time in the 1930s. If Anaïs were alive today, it isn’t all too hard
to imagine her visiting this contemporary explorer’s den, moving from
room to room across these aerial spaces. Today’s home of the adventurer
is uncluttered, yet personal: a place in which every memory finds
its perfect placement. Oddities are tucked away in the corners – a bird
cage, a globe, a hanging constellation; unexpectedly, as you enter
the bathroom, you find that the bathtub is shaped like a freshwater pearl.
The explorer’s chair, awash in light from the window, invites the mind
to wonder in serene contemplation – the attractive warmth of the leather
sofas calls for late night conversation. Which is when the explorer’s
lover steps in, expectant.

A great man’s private life needs not be less interesting than
his public. It is in private, after all, that a great mind is best exercised.
Rich chocolate leather welcomes us home, to the comfort of these
soberly curated quarters, where we are finally able to enjoy a quiet
moment of solitude. This is a place one dreams of returning
to throughout their busy day: one’s own gentleman’s club, with its
simple, precious luxuries, like reading a book by the window, pouring
oneself a drink with a single ice-cube in the middle, or spending a long
hour relaxing in the bathtub. Time spent in private runs on its own
watch, one that we get to set to our own desires, choosing to kick back
after a long day or engage in individual meditation. Knowing there
is room enough in our home to host a whole sophisticated cocktail party,
but relishing the choice to invite our friends over, or spend a perfect
evening alone.

This room of one’s own has no need for a door: it is a modular
space that redesigns itself around you like a musical accompaniment
to the different moments of your day. A harmonious equation that’s
attuned to your wishes: from workplace to studio, open space to intimate
enclosure. The rough edges of its chalk white walls and ceilings offer
DYNAMIC
an ideal canvas for the resident artist: her creative touch applies itself
to remoulding the surfaces of these pure light spaces. Dynamic energy
traverses the atmosphere of these wide attic rooms, as they open one
onto the other in sequence, following the natural progression of the sun
as it travels across the arched windows. Shafts of light cut across to the
ENERGY
centre, from each of the separate living quarters, connecting each point
of the space in an airborne geometry of the whole.

Constellations, as we know them, were born out of the human
eye’s need to arrange space into knowable shapes. The astronomer
Carl Sagan famously said, “If constellations had been named in the 20th
century, I suppose we would see bicycles.” The way we reinvent our
contemporary living spaces is up to us. Our imagination has the power
of harnessing stars, building a finite system out of infinite chaos of the
universe: so is this self-contained environment engineered to encompass

several others, revolving around one another like satellites of a complex
planetary system. Imagine a living room laid out as the dotted spine

of the Milky Way, and an intimate bathroom, coppery and mercurial like
a small secret planet: what else could exist in the space in between, what
wonderful new landscapes? What spatial conversations happen among

A SHADOW
PLAY What if, tumbling down from outer space, you fell, like Alice,
through a large, rectangular mirror, finding yourself on our own side
REPRE-
of the Universe: finally bound to planet Earth? These rooms reinvent
the familiar pattern of human life as we know it. Wood and soft fabrics
reconnect us to our need for a fireplace, a stripped down brick wall
offers a humble, solid comfort: this is a place we are instinctively drawn
to – a place easy to call home. Soft tones of sepia are outlined in solid
black, helping our vision to readjust to the intimate pleasures of
SENTATION
domesticity. Objects are at rest in the natural light that tumbles in from
the high windows, printing the shapes of the city onto the walls inside,
a shadow play representation of the world, at large. The house calmly
responds in an unobtrusive dialogue of inner and outer spaces, in which
each part politely waits for an answer.

EYES AND There is a specific quality to the light, as it refracts on the sand
early in the day, before human footsteps imprint themselves onto
the beach. Come to stand at the water’s edge, close your eyes and fill
your lungs with the fresh morning air; it’s dawn, and the only sounds
FILL YOUR
you can hear are the rustling of long weeds, dry wheat on its stems,
gently swaying – in the distance, perhaps, a lone seagull calling.
Stand in the middle of this space and feel the sea breeze, softly blowing
through the doors of our imaginary beach house, which are left ajar to
invite in the new. These rooms are quietly tropical: summer curls at the
ankles of each woven chair, ruffling up the leaves of the palm trees. It is
a space gently indented with the markings of nature, bearing the signs

of early summer, of a busy living pace that is finally relenting. There is
plenty of time to rest here, draped across an ochre cushion, or on the
white sandbanks of the sofa, or stretched out on the wide bed, limbs
tender with sea salt, in the growing heat of the day.

Follow Puck, the merry sprite, moving silently through this elegant
apartment at night, to experience a contemporary midsummer’s dream.
Individual touches of light crowd in like fireflies at the foot of a tall tree,
CROWD
to welcome the sylvan creature that seeks a place to rest in this magic
forest: on a cream coloured chair, or a milky white sofa, looking up
at the tame stars that hang from the ceiling. Tiptoe with Puck from one
corner to the other of this nocturnal woodland, peeking through shelves
and books, marvelling at its several luminous moons. Mystery emanates
from the glow in each corner, finding its way through the clear glass,

mobile yet still, like the mirrored surface of water. Run your fingers
on the velvetine edge of the bed, hit the light switch: sleep.
