Instructions for the Examination

• Answer all 4 Questions.

• Questions have equal weight.
• Show all the intermediate steps of your solution.
• Make reasonable assumptions if necessary.
• You can only write on the provided space.
• You can not separate the sheets.
• Standard type calculator can be used.
• The exam is closed book.
• Enter your name and ID number on the question paper and Formula sheet

Problem 1:

Measurements of scientific systems are always subject to variation, some more than the
others. Suppose that the measurement error X of a certain physical quantity is decided by
3
density function f X ( x) = (3 − x 2 ) for − 1 < x < 1 .
16
a) Determine the cumulative distribution function of the measurement error.

b) For this particular measurement, it is undesirable if the magnitude of the error (i.e.
x ), exceeds 0.8. What is the probability that this occurs?

c) Determine the mean of the measurement error.

Problem 2:

A car manufacturer produces one car every hour. It is found that 20% of the
manufactured cars have a minor problem.

a) Find the probability that 2 or 3 of the produced cars in the first 12 hours have minor
problems.

b) What is the probability that the first car with minor problem is produced in the 13th
hour?

c) What is the probability that the second car with minor problem is produced in the
10th hour?

Problem 3:

The diameter of a metal shaft is normally distributed with mean of 5 mm and standard
deviation of 0.002 mm.

a) What proportion of shafts will have diameters exceeding 5.005 mm?

b) Below what value of diameter will 15% of the shafts fall?

c) If the specification on the shaft diameter is 5 ± 0.003 mm, what percentage of shafts
confirms to the specification?

Problem 4:

Contamination is a problem in the manufacturing of optical discs (CDs). The number of

particles of contamination that occur on an optical disk has a Poisson distribution, and the
average number of particles per centimetre square of media surface is 0.1. The area of a
disk under study is 100 squared centimetres.

a) Find the probability that 12 particles occur in the area of a disk under study.

b) Determine the probability that 3 or fewer particles occur in the area of a disk under
study.

c) Determine the probability that 12 or fewer particles occur in the area of a disk under
study. Use approximation to normal distribution.
