CIVIL ENGINEERING
Civil engineers are among the most important engineers in our society. Essentially every
aspect of life, from going to the store to taking a shower, depends on a construction project that
could not have happened without a civil engineer. If you want to do creative work that helps the
public, then you may want to put “becoming a structural engineer” at the top of your career list.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING HISTORY

The recorded history of structural engineering starts with the ancient Egyptians in the
27th century BC. Among the first structural engineers in recorded history was a man called
Imhotep. They were involved in the building of the Great Pyramids of Giza circa 2700 B.C.E..
We’ve all heard of the Great Pyramids of Giza. They’re known for their stability and enduring
construction with a structural form that can be scaled. The Great Pyramid of Giza was
constructed in Egypt, it remained the largest man-made structure for millennia and was
considered an unsurpassed. Feat in architecture until the 19th century throughout ancient and
medieval history there is no such record exists of the first calculations of the strength of
structural members or the behavior of structural material.

WHAT IS STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING?

o Structural engineering is a branch of civil engineering that involves the
application of the laws of physics, mathematics and empirical
knowledge to safely design structures.
o Structural engineering is a specialty within the field of civil
engineering focuses on the framework of structures, and on designing
those structures to withstand the stresses and pressures of their
environment and remain safe, stable and secure throughout their use. In
other words, structural engineers make sure that buildings don't fall
down and bridges don't collapse.
o Structural engineering is a subset of civil engineering, focusing on the
“bones and muscles” of man-made structures. Structural engineers are
also responsible for calculating the strength and stability of
load-bearing structures to withstand earthquakes, wind, and
other natural disasters.
o In other words, the ultimate goal of as structural engineer is to
make sure that these structures are able to defy the stresses and
pressures of the environment they’re built in and that they will be safe
and stable for a long time.
ABOUT THE PROFESSION
Structural engineers are responsible for engineering
design and analysis and tray level. Structural engineers may
design the individual elements of a structure and that is the
beams columns and floors of a building more experienced
engineers may be responsible for the structural design and
integrity of an entire system such as a building. Structural
engineers often specialize in particular fields such as: bridge
engineering, building engineering, pipeline engineering
industrial structures or special mechanical structures such as
vehicles ships or aircraft.

ROLES OF A STRUCTURAL ENGINEER

The work of a structural engineer is quite disciplined and difficult at the same time. The
work is directly associated with the structural integrity of a building. Every construction project
needs a structural engineer to accomplish the work. The engineers are solely responsible for
building the construction with their skills and expertise and make sure to leave no errors behind.
Let us know in detail what the work is all about.

What Structural Engineers Do?

The work of a structural engineer is based on the principles of physics and mathematics.
It is all about applying the principles and knowledge of these two genres to build a construction.
The necessary geometry and calculations are done by the engineers to complete the work. Some
of the significant works are as follows:
Structure Design
The designs that are created for the structure are the main thing for the engineers
to finalize. They make sure that the designs withstand the weight and pressure that are
likely to place upon them. They provide important information about the roof type,
floors, foundations, steel beams, quality of the materials and more.
Structure Analysis
The engineers go for a thorough analysis of the structure design before executing
those. It should meet every requirement related to mathematics and physics. Careful
analysis helps in understanding the actual capacity of the structure and how the overall
building should be built.
Why Do You Need a Structural Engineer?
To ensure the safety and durability of the building, it is important to hire a structural
engineer. They are able to determine the optimal material grade to ensure utmost safety of the
people saying under that construction. Structural engineers are trained professionals who are
responsible for making sure that the structures we use in our daily lives, like bridges and tall
buildings, are safe, stable and don’t collapse under applied loads. They do this by applying their
technical knowledge to specify different types od construction materials in various shapes and
geometries and design structures that can withstand the pressures and stresses of their
environment such as gravity loads, storms and earthquakes.
It is the responsibility of the structural engineer to analyze and design a structure that will
safely or resist the stresses, forces and loads. The design must satisfy the project specializations
while meeting all safety regulations. The structure must endure massive loads as well as natural
disasters and climate change.
