School Head: Leader or manager?

Managers have legitimate power while leaders have charismatic power. Subordinates of

managers follow because of the power of authority while subordinates of managers follow

because of influence.

In school, these two types of approaches are used on case to case basis, for example in

our setup, because of the deadlines to be met, school heads need to set objective rules that will

meet the deadline required by the Department. The leading approach is more commonly known

as “lead by example”. For instance, the school wants to strengthen the relationship between

School and the Brgy. Council, our school head spearheaded the coordination with the Brgy, we

went for mapping and other concerns regarding our students.

In her first year in our school, she emphasizes the leading strategy maybe because she

needs to assess the capabilities of her teachers and sometimes shows a managing style by

delegating the work to the teachers who she think is the most capable of the task.

I will prefer the leading approach because it gives me the feeling of belonging and being

guided. It gives an impact on me because the task was made with the guidance of my school

head.
