Toronto has its own childcare finder. This tool allows users to search for centre-based and home childcare by
area, alphabetically, and/or specialty program (i.e., francophone, aboriginal). There is also an online subsidy
application.

The Child Care Finder also provides quality information based on quality ratings derived from a unique City of
Toronto quality assessment tool. All centres in the City of Toronto with service contracts to provide subsidized child
care are part of the City’s quality rating program; this comprises about 80% of licensed spaces.

Ottawa has an online centralized waiting list that allows parents to place their name on waiting lists for
multiple childcare centres and/or home childcare agencies within the City of Ottawa.

Other Consolidated Municipal Service Managers (CMSM) or District Social Services Administration Boards
(DSSAB) in Ontario are likely to have their own local information including lists of child care services and—in
some instances—quality information. Contact information for your local CMSM/DSSAB can be found online.

room
• Long term renting
A big first step is finding accommodation. While you will have arranged temporary accommodation from
your country of origin, now it is time to find a good place to rent for the medium term.

The best place to search for a rental is the internet and classified newspapers. You could also buy a
public transit day pass and visit various residential neighborhoods, where you will likely see posters
in front of some apartment buildings, advertising their rentals.

There are many types of rentals: apartments, houses, condominiums (condos) and shared housing.

Most newcomers rent an apartment as their first home in Canada. Most apartments for rent are empty,
but some buildings offer furnished apartments as well (usually short-term rentals). You have to keep the
furnishings in the same condition as they were at the time you rented the place.

Condominiums are privately owned apartments and are likely to cost more and have better living
conditions.

Renting a house can be a good option if you have a large family, but you should expect the rent to be
higher. You can also rent a separate suite in a house.

High Park, Junction, Junction Triangle that whole area does have some affordable places and all
three neighbourhoods are on or near the Bloor subway line. It's also definitely a safe part of town
(though there are very few places in Toronto I'd say aren't safe) you are single, sharing rent with a
roommate can be a good way to save money and meet new people.

Roncesvalles, Leslieville, Danforth, The Junction, St. Clair west between Bathurst and
maybe Dufferin? Steer clear of Regent Park (Parliament and Gerrard to River and Dundas St.)
and Sherbourne & Dundas. Parkdale is doing a lot better and has reasonable rent.

On few words, you as an individual have to file your income taxes every year. The first time you have to apply
as soon as you get your SIN card (SIN number) in order to get benefits and credits you may be entitled to.

As a resident of Canada for income tax purposes for part or all of a tax year (January 1 to December 31), you must
file a tax return if you:

• have to pay tax; or

• want to claim a refund.

Even if you have not received income in the year, you have to file a tax return to continue receiving the benefit
and credit payments that you are entitled to.

For more information, go to Do you have to file a return?

If you have a modest income and a simple tax situation, and require assistance with filing your return, you may
be eligible to use the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.
