UNIT 4 Summary

Silverstone brings up the approach of realism, with scholars believing that it is still dominant when
studying state behaviour. Like realism, liberalism has a heritage dating all he way back to the. However,
it is deemed as the antithesis of liberalism. Both have similar assumptions that connect to liberal
theories. However, their views on individuals are entirely different for states and individuals, with
realism believing that states are a zero-sum world and liberals believing and arguing that states can help
one another instead of being against each other. Liberals also focus on the necessity of security, liberal
philosophers in the past have argued that security from violence is the main priority of a political figure.
Some philosophers have stated that there is no clear definition on the liberal view of the world. State
behaviour is complex to be captured by either realism and liberalism with each view making a great
contribution to the matter.
