Questions 19 to 26

You are going to read an extract from an article. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct at
(A, B, C or D) and mark the correct liner A, B. C or D.

Each day, we all have routines we don't even think about: for instance. raising our heads from
the pillow each morning or planting our feet on the ground before taking the first few steps of
the day. These experiences of living and moving in the physical world are shared by everyone.
But there are a handful of people out of the 7.6 billion whose daily experience sets them apart.
They float 400-km above our heads in the International Space Station.
Instead of a bed, astronauts dock themselves in a sleep station. They begin their day
when the lights are turned on by mission control at 6 a.m. The journey to the bathroom might
take twice as long as they carefully propel themselves, floating, across corridors. Small details
like brushing your teeth make obvious the peculiarities of living in zero-gravity. The
toothpaste and toothbrush can be left to float in the air and the water sticks to the bristles of
the brush, but where do they spit once done? The answer is they don't - everything is
swallowed to prevent liquid waste from simply floating off.
After breakfast. the crew makes their way down to mission control to run through the
day's schedule before completing routine maintenance and safety checks. One day it might be
disinfecting surfaces or moving some supplies. while another day could involve repairing an
essential piece of equipment like an air filter. Almost every task on the space station is
carefully scripted with step by step instructions but even so. things can still go off-track - quite
literally. In particular, junior astronauts tend to spend their first few days aboard the space
station losing tools. So, everything they use needs to he constantly secured using velcro, clips,
magnets, duct tape or elastic bungees.

HAK CIPTA © : Tidak dibenarkan mengeluar ulang mana-mana bahagian modul ini dalam
sebarang bentuk atau cara sekalipun tanpa kebenaran bertulis daripada pihak Penulis dan
Floating around the space station might sound fun but it also poses a long-term risk to
the health of the crew. The lack of gravity living in orbit makes their bones more brittle.
Moving is so effortless that they also begin to lose muscle strength. To slow this process
down, each crew member is required to exercise for two hours a day. They can choose to use
the treadmill, weights with vacuum tubes. or an exercise bike without a seat, since you can't
sit without gravity! When it comes to nutrition. astronauts select from an array of dehydrated
meals that come in pouches to which hot water is added to some. Sauces like ketchup and
chilli are available but salt and pepper have been transformed into liquids, otherwise the
station would be full of floating granules.
The main purpose of the International Space Station is to act as a scientific research
laboratory, and the experiments the astronauts set up and record cover a wide range of
disciplines. There have been experiments looking at the effects of zero-gravity on different
types of materials, living cells and even small explosions. The station is also a good place
from which to study the Earth by taking different measurements and images over time.
Sometimes, astronauts venture outside the space station for maintenance work to the external
body of the station. Done in pairs, these extra-vehicular activities or 'spacewalks' can be
among an astronaut's most memorable moments in space. It is also one of the riskiest and is
planned in minute detail for up to a month in advance.
But once they have finished all scheduled tasks for the day, the astronauts are free to
spend any remaining time in the evenings however they wish. They call and email their
families from their sleep station, read or watch movies. In this regard, Chris Hadfield became
one of the most famous astronauts for many years after playing guitar and even making a
music video. Probably the most popular pastime among the crew is just watching the Earth
spinning beneath the station the cupola. Astronauts continue to share these moments with us
through their many incredible photographs of cities, forests and weather systems. These are
uploaded to the cubicle before they drift off to sleep. floating 400-km above their friends and
family.

should be able to cover all five sections of the park by sundown. These were the Explorer's
Trail, Palm Hill, Sun Garden, Floral Gardens and Lakeside.
Our journey through the Explorer's Trail began on a canopy bridge. 29. We
stopped at the section of the bridge overlooking the veritable fern garden for a picture before
descending more steps. A Heliconia plant beckoned us for another photo. Obliging Waithin, I
took several of her photos with the Heliconia plant before insisting we continue on our walk.
As its name suggests. Palm Hill was adorned with luxuriant palm trees that swayed gently in
the afternoon breeze. 30. We then made our way to the Sun Garden where a tall, white
sundial casts its shadow on the flat carpet of grass. Based on the information on the board, we
took some time figuring out how the ancient time-telling instrument works. 'Fascinating,' said
Waithin as she casually snapped another picture.
Our next stop was truly something to behold. 31. Bearing a spectacular feast
for the eyes, the Floral Gardens was awash with vibrant colours and landscaped to
perfection. We soon left the orchids, bougainvilleas and other tropical flowers behind as the
Putrajaya Lakeside came into view.
It seemed that we had arrived just in time to watch the sun slowly approach the
horizon, illuminating the gentle ripples across the water's surface. Save for the distant squeals
of passengers on colliding paddle boats, the Lakeside was as tranquil as can be. After crossing
the boardwalk, we soon passed through the familiar fern garden. 32. We spotted trams

You are going to read an extract from an article. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct
answer A, B, C or D and on your answer sheet.

Neighbours come by chance and if they are wonderful, it is a blessing to us. That was what I
thought because I met a lot of interesting people when I rented out a unit next to my
apartment. Four years ago, a young couple came to reside there. They were introduced by my
agent and I negotiated with the wife for the rental.
One evening, while I was playing the guitar and hying to write a song, there was a
knock on my door. To my surprise, it was Mathew James, my new neighbour, and he had a
bicycle light in his hand. He said he knew 1 often cycled at night but my bike had no light. It
was dangerous, he said. We became quite friendly after that. He lived next door for several
years.
Then, one afternoon, I received a disturbing call from my office. An FBI agent would
like to speak to me to enquire about my tenant. I thought it could wait because I was about to
go to a concert. But the officer sounded serious about the matter. At the office, I was shoved a
poster of a WANTED man. Immediately, I could recognise the familiar face though the name
was different. Was this the man who bought me a bike light because he was worried I was
cycling at night?
The next thing the FBI wanted was my help to apprehend the criminal. For a few
minutes I was taken aback because I was unsure of what I was involved in. It was not as
simple as I thought. The first thing I had to do was to give them the spare keys. However, that
was not all. I was supposed to go and knock on the door to see whether he was there. But they
changed their plan.
An agent placed himself at the window which had a good view of the James's balcony
from across the street. Another had to go to my apartment. So, I told him to go through an
alley on the side so he did not have to walk in front of the building. As for me, I had to walk
in front in order not to arouse any suspicion. After I got in, I drew a floor plan of the James's
unit. The officer was throwing ideas around hying to find a way to trap the notorious criminal.
As we shared the main wall, we decided to break into his storage locker.
While the plan was being laid out, I Googled the man whom I thought was my nice
ordinary neighbour. What I read made my blood run cold. Perhaps he would hurt me or
probably be ready with a gun if he had to. The initial shock at discovering his secret had made
me forget my relationship with Mathew. This was a man who had never been anything but
nice to me. In fact, every year he would not forget to buy me a Christmas present. Second
thoughts encroached me and I started to waver and was apprehensive of rendering help to the
FBI.
In the end, I reluctantly made the call but was a bit relieved when there was no answer.
The officers insisted that I went over and knocked on the door. Fortunately, his wife returned
the call.
"Claire, the storage has been broken into. Ask Mathew to meet me or I have to call the
police."
From the window, I could see Claire's worried look. Mathew agreed to come down.
When I went to the streets, there were police cars and half a dozen FBI agents. Mathew
Gasko was taken and handcuffed. Unfortunately, Claire was also arrested for being his
accomplice. Claire walked past me and said, "Hi, josh!" I was silent.
After the incident, my family was worried about my safety while some of my friends
jokingly betted how long I would live. Then, two months after he was caught, I received a

letter from Mathew. He released me from my guilt and fears. He wrote, "No worries, buddy!
They would have got me somehow even without your help!" New neighbours took up the
place and they seemed nice people too. But who knows? We cannot judge a book by its cover!

A LESSON LEARNT THE HARD WAY

One day, I was feeling bored. I was about fourteen. 27 My grandparents forbade
me to go out to sea that day as they had heard that a storm would be coming. I ignored
their warning.
When my grandparents were busy I quietly snuck out of the house and went to my
grandfather’s boat. 1 did not believe the storm would be coming soon. 28

I boarded the boat and rowed to the middle of the sea. I then took out my fishing rod
and began to fish. As I was fishing, a strong wind began to blow and suddenly the sky turned
dark. I quickly put away my fishing rod and began to row hack to shore. 29 I just could
not control the boat.
After what seemed like hours of floating aimlessly at sea, I landed on a remote island.
Just as I landed on the island it began to rain heavily. There was no shelter to be found at the
remote island. I was soon soaking wet.
30 After a few hours the rain finally stopped. I felt cold and hungry. I walked around the

Questions 33 to 40
We interviewed six teenagers about how they coped with school closures during the coronavirus
pandemic. Read the texts below and answer the questions that follow.

Teens on Coping with School Closures

A — ADHAM, 16 years old
School closure took a toll on my mental health but having someone to talk to helped me
overcome the feeling of isolation. I am grateful for my friends who would take my call at a
moment's notice. I too lent an ear whenever they needed to vent. It is important to maintain a
healthy support system among us.

B — BEATRICE, 15 years old

Studying online became the new normal when schools closed. At first, waking up late and
attending lessons in my pyjamas was fun. However, the novelty soon wore off and I knew I
needed to manage my studies more systematically. So I devised a schedule to follow closely
and thus far, I am on track!

C — CHAI YEN. 17 years old

There was a lot of uncertainty surrounding our current situation. The indefinite school closure
made me feel anxious, but I also knew it is better to consider the facts instead of descending
into a never-ending spiral of ‘What if’ questions. In particular, I found that reading and
sharing verified news about the pandemic has helped my peers and I to cope.

D — DAVINDRAN, 16 years old

My phone had been keeping me company during the first few weeks of school closure.
However, constantly scrolling through my social media feeds only exacerbated my tiredness.
This is why I made the decision to turn off my phone between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.
My eyes now feel less strained and I have no regrets!

E — ELISYA, 14 years old

As I was a very active student in school. I suddenly felt like I had too much time on my hands
when we were forced to study from home. Thankfully, I picked up new hobbies such as
gardening and learning to cook. These have helped me channel my energy positively, in
addition to forging stronger ties with my family.

F — FABIAN, 17 years old

What I missed most during the school closure was training with the athletics team in school.
To keep our morale high, we have been scheduling video calls to work out together online.
Even though is not the same as running freely on the school field, something is better than
nothing to boost our endorphins and keep us sane.

PAPER 1119/2 WRITING

Part 1

To: ramesh@gmail.com
From: ismail@gmail.com
Subject: Pointers to keep clean, hygienic and safe

Hi, Ramesh!

How are you? 1 hope you are doing well there. Here are some pointers that I could think of
Firstly, all students must arrive at school wearing a face cover or mask and continue
wearing it all through, especially when in class, or doing any activity in groups, remind all
students not to exchange masks with others. In additions, every student needs to learn how
to cough or sneeze into a tissue or elbow and avoid touching face, eyes, mouth and nose.
Perhaps, schools can supply necessary equipment like gloves, face masks, hand washing
soaps for sanitation.
That is all from me 1 will write to you more when 1 have more ideas.

Mobile phones are so popular today that now it becomes a necessity for everyone. Mobile
phone is indeed a wonderful invention of man. It does not only help people to communicate but
also to entertain. However, there are advantages and disadvantages of mobile phones for
students.

The first advantage is we can keep ourselves up to date using mobile phones. It keeps us
informed of all current issues happening around the world. Information is shared throughout
various platform such as Googie, Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp and Youtube where we can read
news and watch video online.

Secondly, we can learn many new skills using our mobile phone. There are many
languages teaching programs, baking and decoration classes online. We do not have to travel far
to learn new skills. We can use Zoom, Google Meet or Skype to join a class and study.

Thirdly, mobile phone is a source of entertainment. We can watch movies, drama., music
videos, songs or play games after a hard day's at school. We can relax at borne and watch
movies that we like without having to go to the cinema.

Nevertheless, there are disadvantages of mobile phone for students. First, students
gradually become passive in their action. It may prevent us from socializing with other people in
real life. Students might prefer playing games or watching videos online rather than spending
quality time with family and friends.

Secondly, students have the tendencies to be neglecting their duties. They neglect their
homework or revision because they are so keen on using their mobile phones. They also tend to
refuse helping with house chores because they do not want to miss watching their favourite
drama.

Thirdly, the bad influence of mobile phones on the young generation is inevitable. It
encourages them to commit crimes. Violence, nudity, and irrelevance trends can be accessed
easily online. This can lead to robbery. theft, cyberbullying, spreading fake news and murder.

In a nutshell, mobile phone is very useful in today's world. However, as a student, we

must know how to use mobile phone wisely. Be extra careful not to overindulge in it and use it
sensibly.

My School Canteen

By Robert Han

School canteens serve students and members of the staff in schools. with light

effort should be made to ensure that students get the best food at the cheapest rate.

I suggest that more fresh fruits like bananas, oranges. and dry fruits should also be sold,

colourings. Thus, school canteens should not stock these types of food. Instead. canteen
operators should be allowed only to sell rice, noodles, pasta, bread. fresh salad and other raw
vegetables as well as fruits and juices. The link between eating nutritious food and performance
in examinations has been well established. Junk food only makes a student lethargic as he or she
is deprived of essential vitamins.

Although the food is always fresh and clean. It is served in disposable containers which
contributes to more pollution. The plastic bags or polystyrene containers are non-biodegradable

Therefore. these containers should be replaced with plastic or steel trays that can be washed
daily. In addition, the usage of plastic straws should be banned and students must be encouraged
to bring their own spoon. fork as well as steel straws.

The school should also remove the vending machines which sell soft drinks. Soft drinks
are spiked with sugar and have no nutritional content. The main ingredients of these carbonated
drinks are water. sugar and colourings which are harmful to us over the long term. Excessive
sugar consumption contributes to diabetes which is life threatening. Those who consume too
much sugar too are at risk of becoming obese which can lead to medical complications. Thus,
schools should only allow the presence of vending machines that stock health drinks such as soy
bean milk, yoghurt drink. herbal teas and others. The latter has low sugar content but rich in
protein and carbohydrate.

During the interval, there is a great rush but some boys do not behave themselves and the
service becomes a problem. As a prefect, I should work out a better system for supervising
pupils with the other prefects on duty to maintain good discipline amongst the students. Students
stay in the school almost every day for five or six hours continuously, with little break during the
time. Hence to have something to fill their hungry stomach in between is not a luxury but a
necessity.

A film review:

‘Avatar' By: Anita

Lee

The film, Avatar is directed by James Cameron. It stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana.
Stephen Lang. and Sigourney Weaver. The cinematography is in the hands of Mauro Fiore
with Joe Letteri handling the special effects and music by James Hormer. This action film runs
for 2 hours and 43 minutes.

The film tells the story of a paraplegic marine, Jake Sully played by actor Sam
Worthington. Jake's twin brother dies, he is asked at the last minute to go to a new planet called
Pandora in his brother’s place. Jake is sent on a special mission, along with his new virtual
avatar body so that he looks like the natives, to integrate himself with them and gain their trust.
Avatar has received attention because it is the first film to be released in 3D. The 3D effects
were smooth and mesmerising. They made the film come to life with the feeling that the
breathtaking scenery was directly in front of you and that you were there with the characters and
among the landscape.

Avatar truly marks the coming-of-age of 3D cinema with its pure technology, special
effects, beautiful finesse, aesthete. shock, fearfulness and eye for detail. The directors vision
inside the Pandora is a pure art that is made more beautiful with the tall and wide-eyed people,
lush greenery and the post-modern creatures. With its simple straightforward narration, the
movie's evergreen romance between a human and an alien blended beautifully with the strong
anti-war statement, giving Avatar its simplicity and heart.

Director and screenwriter, James Cameron has no doubt created a burly and visually
thrilling appeal to save the world before it is too late. Cinematography by Mauro Fiore is

excellent and the special effects by Joe Letteri are truly mind blowing. Music given by James
Ilpier goes off smoothly with the flow of the movie. Both Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington
perform their roles excellently and have shaped up the warm love story of the Navi woman and
the blue skinned human avatar perfectly.

I enjoyed the film for its uniqueness. its storyline of survival set against power and
violence. I would rate it 8/10. If you like futuristic films with a dash of incredulity plus romance
and 3D magic. Avatar is for you.

Question 5

A Dream Comes Through

By Nonman Bin Salim

We have dreams practically every night. Some of these dreams are remembered vividly.
Other dreams, however, are forgotten as soon as we wake up. I often dream about flying. When I
wake up. the sensation of being high up in the air remains with me and this makes me learn more
about aircraft. I become more and more interested and I believe soon I will have to disappoint
my parents.

My parents have told me several times that they would like me to take up architecture.
But I know that my aptitude is different. My mother was very frightened when I told her of my
dream. She mentioned all the air crashes she had read about and told me that it is a hazardous
occupation. My father is not concerned about the hazards and it seems he wants to realise in me
an ambition which he had nursed in his youth. My friends seem to think that being a pilot is as
good a job as any other, but they wonder if I am suited for it. Some of my friends think that I am
only interested in the idea of being a pilot and have warned me against deceiving myself.

I should think that this idea developed in me when at the age of nine, my father took me
for a joy ride on a Cessna. I still remember its name - The Sky Hawk. I watched what the pilot
did from the time of take-off until landing. I then imagined myself strapped in the cockpit,
handling the controls. When an air show was held, I went everyday of the week to see the
demonstrations. It was this air show I believe, that made me more determined. I am a member of
the Air-Training Corps. One of my hobbies is building model aircraft, and I have more than a

54

HAK CIPTA © : Tidak dibenarkan mengeluar ulang mana-mana bahagian modul ini dalam
sebarang bentuk atau cara sekalipun tanpa kebenaran bertulis daripada pihak Penulis dan
dozen plastic models suspended from the ceiling of my room. I also make aircraft models with
balsa wood and paper and spend hours flying them in the open field next to my house.

I feel that I have the necessary qualities to become a pilot. My little mathematical ability
should enable me to study the theoretical part of the pilot's course. I am in the science stream and
Physics subject I learn at school will be an advantage. My vision is 6/6 and I am above the
average in height. My school has developed in me a sense of responsibility and I am safety-
conscious.

I dream to be commercial pilot handling passenger aircraft. Being a commercial pilot has
several material advantages. Commercial pilots are very highly paid and are also given many
fringe benefits. They can travel to all the cities that their airline serves. If they get tired of one
circuit, they can switch to another and visit all the countries in the new itinerary. When out of the
country, they are given excellent accommodation and other benefits.

As other boys of my age, I have a dream. The realisation of it may not be possible. None
the less, I have at least the satisfaction of having a goal before me and the desire to reach it, will
give me sufficient motivation. I now work harder at scoring better grades for most of my
subjects as I aim to get that scholarship which will get me to a college and graduate with a
bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering.

Part 2 Individual Long Turn

Question 1

Candidate A: A family celebration I recently had was Hari Raya Aidil Fitri. I celebrated it at
home as we could not visit relatives and friends due to the movement control during the Covid
19 pandemic. Although I was not able to visit my grandparents in 1poh and my friends. I still

enjoyed myself because my parents bought me new clothes and my mom cooked a lot of my
favourite dishes. Family celebrations are important in Malaysia because they are apart of our
tradition. Traditions help create memories, help impart our life values to children and also help
create a sense of belonging. Celebrations also strengthen family bonds.

Candidate B: The last celebration I had was my mother's birthday. I had a good time with my
parents and siblings. I enjoyed our dinner at the restaurant as there were delicious food and
drinks and my mother loved the present that I gave her.

Question 2

Candidate B: The person I admire is my mother. She is in her forties now and is a teacher in a
secondary school in Rawang. She is quite tall and has a sweet smile. She is also bespectacled. I
admire my mother for her hard work and dedication to her family and also career. She is quite
strict with all her three children but I know that her reminders and advice have helped me
through most of my problems. I think it is important for people to have good role models
because they can inspire us to achieve the zenith of success. They help us improve our life and
attitude as well as become a guiding light when we have bigger goals to achieve.

Candidate A: I admire my elder brother. He is a talented person and is now studying computer
programming in the States. He is proficient in programming languages and he can identify
problems and come up with the most efficient ways to solve coding related to programming.

Part 3 Discussion Task

Candidate A: In my opinion, people shop online because there are no crowds. We do not need to
go to shops which are often crowded with people especially during sales.

Candidate B: You're right. It is also convenient as we can order or buy things from the comfort
of our homes. We just need to use our mobile phone or tablet and click the app and order the
goods.

Candidate A: Another reason people like online shopping is it is time-saving - ordering items at
the click of a few buttons and we also save time queueing in the shops do make payment.

Candidate B: There are also wide variety of products on online shopping. If you cannot find the
product from an app, you can always search for it in another app.

Candidate A: I agree. In fact, items online have better prices. The products are cheaper and there
are daily discounts too. This is because the companies do not have to pay rental fees for their
shops.

Candidate B: When we shop online, we can also follow the trend. The fashion and style are
always the latest.

Candidate A/B: I think the best reason people shop online is because it is time-saving. I
mentioned earlier that we can order products by just clicking a few buttons or keys on our
mobile phone, tablet or laptop and choose the app we won’t and we can type the product we
wish to buy. The app will list the products in less than a minute.

Candidate A/B: I agree with you. We also don't waste time travelling to the shops and maybe,
we need more time to find a parking space.

Candidate A/B: Teacher, both of us agree that time-saving is the best reason why people shop
online.

Subject: My Health Tip

Hi Derrick,

I’d love to lend a hand!

I stay healthy by exercising. I go for a jog thrice a week. It helps strengthen my muscles,
improve my cardiovascular fitness and maintains my weight. Besides that, jogging boosts my
endorphins which helps me manage stress.
The equipment I need is a pair of trainers and comfortable exercise clothes. Sometimes, I take
my phone so I can listen to my favourite songs. I usually jog alone but every now and then,
my father joins me.
Good luck!

Question 2

I have always had my heart set on becoming a surgeon. A surgeon is a medical doctor
who specialises in treatment through operations. It takes years of tough training to become a
qualified surgeon. Nevertheless, I am determined.

Firstly, I find the human body fascinating. Each tissue, organ and system is vital to
ensure that a person is functioning optimally, and surgeons do the work of restoring these parts
in the event of damage.

To illustrate the impact of surgeons on society, we can cite the Director General of
Health, Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah as a prime example of a surgeon who is handling a
national health crisis. Besides carrying out operations, surgeons also make a positive impact on
their patients' lives through their kindness during consultations.

In conclusion, my ambition is driven by both my personal interests as well as the

contributions it makes on society. Therefore, I vouch to fulfil this career aspiration.

Question 3

School Library

This report highlights a few features of the school library that would benefit from some
changes. Many students frequent the library during break time and after school because it is a
comfortable place to relax. However, more students will visit the library if some measures are
taken.

While the library boasts an extensive collection of revision books, the leisure reading
collection needs to be expanded. The latter should include materials of different genres that are
suitable for a teenage audience. This way, students will be mole motivated to read the library
books and the reading habit can be inculcated.

Most students have complained that we do not easily know the arrival of any new books.
The student librarians have kindly pointed out that a list of new arrivals is printed out and stuck
on the noticeboard. However, it would be better if an eye-catching display of new books is set up
in the library. This will not only keep more students up to date on the latest books, but also
beautify the space.

Presently, there is only one desktop for students to use at the computer station in the
library. This has resulted in a long queue and a device monopoly by the first student who gets
there. This problem can be solved if more desktops are installed. This will consolidate the school
library's aim of becoming a well-equipped resource centre.

To sum up, I believe that if the above recommendations are implemented, the library will
be frequented by more students.

Question 4

Causes, Effects and Solutions for Climate Change

What exactly is climate change? For those who do not know, the sun emits solar energy
which is partly absorbed by the earth's surface and partly reflected back into space. Climate
change refers to the environmental phenomenon where solar energy does not dissipate back into
space due to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that trap it. The planet. therefore, grows
warmer leading to further environmental changes.

One of the greenhouse gasses is carbon dioxide. This gas is produced when we burn
fossil fuels for transportation, industry, and even to generate electricity. On the other hand,
plants which absorb carbon dioxide for photosynthesis are being destroyed through
deforestation which is often motivated by urban development.

As a consequence, the rising temperatures have caused polar ice caps to melt,
endangering Arctic species. Our planet has also become more susceptible to extreme weather
conditions such as tropical cyclones and hurricanes which devastate the lives of affected
communities.

As young people, we have a part to play in mitigating climate change. Organising local
campaigns is one strategy we can undertake. We will also need to practise cycling, walking or
taking public transportation whenever we can. Additionally, practising the 3Rs of reducing,
reusing and recycling will decrease the amount of waste.

In conclusion, climate change is an issue to be taken seriously as it has dire consequences

for the community. Understanding its causes and putting in effort to reduce our carbon footprint
will ensure the survival of our planet and communities.

Question 5

A Kind Deed

The ringing of the bell signalled that it was time for recess. We filed out of the classroom
in rows, making a beeline for the canteen. The sight and smells of piping hot food made our
mouths water. Nevertheless, we waited patiently as we queued in rows before purchasing our
food.

When I sat down with my friends, I noticed a familiar figure out of the corner of my eye.
Mariam, our new classmate, who was in the queue earlier appeared to be leaving. I was slightly
puzzled as I watched her walk away empty-handed. Something told me I should find out what
was wrong.

I traced the path I saw Mariam took. Then, I saw her sitting alone at the gazebo. `Hey,
Mariam!' I said and asked why she wasn't eating. She smiled back and shared that she had
accidentally left her purse at home, and only realised this when she was queueing up. She did not
feel comfortable about borrowing from any of us as she hardly knew us.

I could relate to her as I too was a new student in the school last year. So, I invited
her back to the canteen and lent her five ringgit to buy food. My friends warmly welcomed
her to our table and we started chatting.

Her eyes twinkled as she thanked us for being so welcoming towards her. The obvious
delight in her expression was priceless. It made me realise that a little kindness does go a long
way.

Question 1

Candidate A: An emergency that I have experienced was when I almost set the kitchen on fire
two years ago. It was my mother's birthday and 1 wanted to surprise her by cooking her a meal. I
was alone in the house as my parents and brother went out to get my mother a gift. I made beef
stew and was waiting for the dish to simmer. Unfortunately, I fell asleep. I woke up to the smell
of smoke and quickly rushed to the kitchen. The pot was on fire! To make matters worse, the
oven mitt which I had placed close to the stove was on fire too! I tried to put out the fire by
splashing jugs of water but it just got bigger. So I had to call the fire department. My parents
came home just as the firemen finished putting out the fire. My mother took one look at her
blackened kitchen cabinet and stove and almost cried. That was indeed an unforgettable birthday
for her. I have also stopped cooking since.

Candidate B: Well, mine is not as dramatic as Candidate A's, thankfully. It was when my cat
climbed up the roof and did not know how to get down. I think it happened sometime last year.
My dad climbed up a ladder and tried to reach it but it was too afraid to come closer. We even
laid a bedsheet and tried to coax it to jump. All to no avail. In the end, we had to call the fire
department too!

Question 2

Candidate B: A place that I would like to visit is the Mossy Forest in Mount Brinchang,
Cameron Highlands. I have always liked nature, but Mossy Forest has that added mysterious
element because it is surrounded by mist due to its elevated location. The forest is blanketed
with moss too, and is home to huge, ancient trees and lots of unique flora and fauna. I have seen
pictures of it and it looks magical! It reminds me of the forest in The Lord of the Rings. If I ever
get a chance to go there, I would like to get a guide so that I could learn more about the history
as well as the numerous species found there. I would also take as many pictures as possible
because I'm sure the place would be beautiful. I would like to go there with my father because
we both like to hike and we both enjoy nature. I'm sure we’ll have a marvellous time.

Candidate A: I would like to visit Mabul Island because I'm fascinated with underwater
creatures. I hear the island is one of the top diving spots not only in Malaysia, but the world. The
water is crystal clear, and it has many rare aquatic species too. Aside from that, it has pristine
beaches which would be perfect for a family holiday.

Part 3 Discussion Task

Candidate A: In my opinion, the common teenage problem is stress. The pressures teenage face
from school, parents and surrounding can create ongoing patterns of stress. Being stuck at home
and away from regular life adds to that feeling.

Candidate B: You're right. Peer pressure is also another common problem. Their peers them to
do something that one wouldn’t normally do to fit in with friends. For example, drinking and
drug use.

Candidate A: Another common problem faced by teenage is cyber addiction. A teenage might be
involved in cybersex where they are addicted to pornography.

Candidate B: Teenagers also will have self-esteem and body image problem. Teenagers who
have imperfect body figures and faces will be given negative comments from their friends.

Candidate A: I agree. In fact, depression is also a common problem. Teenage will get depress
easily due to the hormonal changes in the body.

Candidate B: Some teenagers will be bullied by their peers as they are more weak and fragile or
even weak in academic achievements.

Candidate A/B: I think the most common teenage problem is stress. As I have mentioned earlier,
teenage need to face pressure from school, parents and surrounding that can create ongoing
stress in them. Being stuck at home and away from regular life especially during this Covid-19
pandemic adds to that feeling.

Candidate A/B: I agree with you. Teenagers need to do so many assignments and keep track on
their academic achievements.

Candidate A/B: Teacher, both of us agree that stress is the common teenage problem.
