A Chinese imperial dynasty known as the Song (960–1279) succeeded the Five Dynasties and

Ten Kingdoms period (907-960) and came before the Yuan (1271–1368), which overthrew the
Song dynasty in 1279. The conquest of northern China by the Jin dynasty (1115-1234) in 1127
and the ensuing shift of the capital from Bianjing (current-day Kaifeng) in the north to Lin'an
(current-day Hangzhou) in the south led to the traditional division into the Northern Song
dynasty (960-1127) and Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279).
