Standards / Codes of Practice

• Provide guidelines for
CE2032 Structural Design I – Designs (philosophies, methods, relevant parameters, etc.)
– (and some other activities such as standards for testing of materials, specifications for
materials etc.)
• Organizations involved (examples)
Introduction to Eurocodes –

Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI)
British Standards Institute (BSI)
– American Concrete Institute (ACI)
– American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) – this has now changed the name to
“ASTM International”

Situation in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan Construction Industry
• In the past followed British Standards (BS) mostly, and ASTM in some
cases.
• SLSI has developed (or adopted other standards with appropriate • Sri Lankan Industry is in transition: using both - old BS codes
modifications as) it own Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) and the new Eurocodes
• For structural designs Sri Lanka has been using relevant British Standards /
codes of practice. In some special cases codes from other countries also • It is expected that within the next few years this transition will
have been used (Ex: Japanese, Chinese codes) be completed.
• In Europe a common set of standards for structural designs has been
developed (called “Eurocodes”) • For the module CE2032 we will use Eurocodes (Actually they
• British Standards Institute adopted Eurocodes effective 2010 are now Sri Lankan codes as well).
• SLSI also has now adopted the Eurocodes for structural designs

Eurocodes
• Work started in 1975
• Set of 10 codes (Numbers 1990, 1991, …, 1999)
• Each of the 10 codes usually has several parts
• Total 58 parts
• Publication of all 58 parts completed in 2007
• In March 2010 previous British Standards dealing with the subject
matters covered by Eurocodes were withdrawn and the Eurocodes
were adopted in their place. (This was done in all EU countries)
