(ii) If 𝑥 𝑚 𝑦 𝑛 = (𝑥 + 𝑦)𝑚+𝑛 , show that 𝑦2 = 0. (2+3)

𝑥
2. (i) Find the extreme value(s), if any, of the following function: log 𝑥
(ii) The radius of a spherical balloon is increasing at the rate of 7cm/sec. Find the rate at which
its surface area and volume are increasing at the instant when the radius is 5 cm. (2+3)

3. Calculate the missing frequency from the following distribution if the median is 8.53 inches.

Height (inches) 5.1 – 6 6.1 – 7 7.1 – 8 8.1 – 9 9.1 – 10 10.1 – 11 11.1 – 12

No. of plants 3 8 27 ? 17 11 9

4. The mean and S.D. of a group of 25 observations were found to be 30 and 3 respectively. After
the calculations, it was found that two of the observations were incorrect, which were recorded
as 29 and 31. Find the mean and S.D., if the incorrect observations are omitted.

5. (i) Prove that 𝑛𝐶𝑟 + 𝑛𝐶𝑟−1 = 𝑛+1𝐶𝑟 .

(ii) In how many ways 3 chairs can be filled from 6 persons? (3+2)

6. (i) For two events A and B, prove that 𝑃(𝐴 ∪ 𝐵) + 𝑃(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) = 𝑃(𝐴) + 𝑃(𝐵).
(ii) The letters of the word “DIRECTOR” are arranged at random. Find the probability that the
vowels will be always together. (3+2)

7. Deduce the mean and standard deviation of Poisson distribution. (3+2)

Group – B
Answer ANY TWO of the following questions: [2 × 10 = 20]
𝜕2 𝑢 𝜕2 𝑢 𝜕2 𝑢 1
8. (i) If 𝑢 = log √𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 𝑧 2 , show that 𝜕𝑥 2 + 𝜕𝑦 2 + 𝜕𝑧 2 = 𝑥 2 +𝑦2 +𝑧 2.
(ii) Verify Euler’s Theorem when 𝑢 = √𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2. (5+5)

9. (i) The runs of two batsmen Aftab (A) and Ratul (B) scored in 8 consecutive innings are as
follows:
A 32 28 47 63 71 39 60 96
B 19 31 48 53 90 67 62 40
