The showroom by &Tradition is created

as a contemporary small scale version
of a monochrome and harmonious vil-
lage structure inside a big warehouse. 
  The idea is to make the structure
balance between a coherent minima­
list spatial art installation - drawing on
inspiration from works of artists and
architects such as Donald Judd, Richard
Serra and Peter Eisenman, combined
with classic architectural elements
from the village -  the main street, the
alley, the square, the tower, the city
wall. Each house in this village - twelve
in total - is built with a completely matt
monochrome exterior like an architec-
tural model landscape in 1:1 revealing
each house very differentiated interior
with its own function and purpose.
One house is built with light wood in-
side resembling a minimalist Japanese
pavilion.
   Another would be all color inside
inspired more by Luis Barragan or Carlo
Scarpa, creating a completely different
universe for displaying the &tradition
products. Some of our houses will be
created in collaboration with our favo­
rite partners continuously re-decorated
and rearranged to inspire our clients
to see and choose materials for their
furniture and boutiques.

&tradition is a danish design company established in 2010 with the founding principle being tradition tied to
innovation. Our unique library of furniture and lighting spans from the 1930s to the present day and includes
designs by internationally renowned designers.

In a poetic twist, the village reflects the city across the water. Here are pitched roofs, flat
roofs, steeples and a square, with each archetypal building becoming a micro environment
in which &tradition’s ever-increasing collection of furniture and lighting is shown.
   The abstract building shapes serve as white cubes for the twice-yearly changing displays
that will be curated by artists and designers and they add an aura of the domestic to a
space, which is otherwise purely industrial.

“When we started the project we were focused on producing something

long lasting, something to cherish,” says studio vit. “A long-lasting product
is a classical product and therefore fits in well with &tradition’s philoso-
phy of producing traditional designs.”

Made from Italian Bianco Carrara marble and mouth-blown borosilicate

glass, Marble lights uses high quality materials and pure geometric shapes
that push the light towards the realm of art object. Yet there is playful-
ness in the way they reference the archetypal light bulb form. In this way
the designs fulfil &tradition’s second criteria – innovation.

The Marble Lights collection includes one table light and five pendant
lights in different proportions. The pendants can either be suspended
from the ceiling on their own, or they can be used with a marble weight
that acts as a counterweight on the floor. “The contrast between the sizes
of the glass and marble components produces interesting combinations
when the lights are brought together,” says studio vit.

The refined appearance of the pendants draws attention to the quality

marble and the borosilicate glass. The position of the lightsource, embed-
ded within the marble, further highlights the virtues of the materials, its
light spreading across the stone’s surface and illuminating the delicate
glass bubble.

“This is the first time &tradition has worked with studio vit but we al-
ready have plans for the future,” says Martin Kornbek Hansen, the founder
of &tradition. “The unique combination of their backgrounds in fashion
and furniture allows them to produce interesting pieces that possess
a refined elegance, fitting right in with &tradition’s collection.”

Although ATWTP has designed patterns for fabrics before, this is the first
time the graphic design studio has worked with woven textiles. Another
Rug is manufactured using the ancient Kilim technique, a type of tapestry-
woven rug from the Middle and Far East. Yet Another Rug has an edgy,
contemporary feel, with its bold colour palette, its graphic design and playful
coloured fringe.

“In the scrapbook of the sketching process we have a lot of pictures of

different rooms; especially rooms with stairs,” says Petra Olsson Gendt,
one of the two founding partners of ATWTP. “In a way Another Rug is an
abstract trompe l’oeil, the illusion of a room within a room.”

The end design is of an endless stair portrayed from a perspective that

gives it a depth and makes it a playful addition to any space. “It’s really
important to us that while Another Rug has an abstract graphic motif, it
also uses a very traditional craft technique and high quality materials,”
says &tradition founder Martin Kornbek Hansen. “This clash of old and new
is what characterises &tradition’s work.”

Another Rug is available in three different sizes and four different colour
combinations; Yellow Amber, Red Volcano, Green Jade and Blue Thunder. It
is produced in pure New Zealand wool and cotton, adding a highly crafted,
luxurious dimension to the product.

The addition of rugs to the &tradition collection, introduces new possibilities

for the &tradition brand. “In a way these rugs embrace the whole &tradition
collection and they help create a brand environment,” says Kornbek Hansen.
“Rugs are fundamental when creating spaces.”

“The In Between Table is a thing of beauty,” says Martin Kornbek Hansen,

the founder of &tradition, “the solid oak table is beautifully crafted to
produce a contemporary dining table, making it a natural extension of the
In Between collection.” The In Between chair was the first chair to be added
to the &tradition stable of furniture and Kallio has reinterpreted certain
aspects of the chair in the creation of the table. The curvature of the circular
table is for example reminiscent of the negative space in the form of the
chair’s back rest. Similarly the angles of the legs of the table reflect the
angles of the chair legs.

The table legs were created using woodturning, a traditional technique that
uses a lathe to shape wood. For &tradition a connection to the past is an
essential component for any item in the collection. “Wood turning is a result
of my love for Scandinavian heritage and traditional wood crafting,” says
Kallio, “there is a satisfaction that comes from using old techniques.”

The materials used for the table further solidify a link to the past. The solid
oak used is a sturdy, reliable wood that is steeped in Scandinavian heritage.
“Oak is a good long-lasting material that people can easily relate to,”
says Kallio.

Furthermore, the shape of the table has been chosen to address issues within
modern interiors. Its round shape means it must be brought away from
walls, therefore taking an active role in any room. The circular form of the
table also means that interaction when sat at the table is a more intimate
and egalitarian affair.

“Sami Kallio’s ability to use traditional woodworking techniques to produce

something that is fresh and original sets him apart as an ideal designer for
&tradition,” says Hansen.
