Occidentului Street is a typical street for the central area of Bucharest, with isolated villas in the middle of the
yard, wagon-houses, buildings from the interwar period and insertions from the ‘60s and ‘70s. The gerenal
v o l u m e i s d e c o m p o s e d t h r o u g h s e v e r a l m o v e m e n t s a n d s e t- b a c k s i n t o a r o w o f s m a l l e r h o u s e s w i t h d i f fe r e n t
heights that sequence the perception of the building and nuances the relationship to the neighbouring houses
and the fragmentary surroundings.
The intervention proposes a community of 20 apartments and a commercial unit on the wide but relatively
s h a l l o w p l o t . A l l u n i t s a r e t r a n s v e r s a l / d o u b l e o r i e n t e d a n d o r g a n i ze d o n s p l i t- l e v e l s . I n s t e a d o f t y p i c a l s t a c ke d
g e n e r a l f l o o r s , h e r e t h e f l o o r s a n d c e i l i n g s m o v e a n d g e n e r a t e a s e r i e s o f s t a g g e r e d f l o o r s , l e v e l d i f fe r e n c e s a n d
variations in height and depth – lending the apartments something of the vertical dimension of dwelling.
T h e o p e n f a c a d e s r e f l e c t t h e v a r i e d i n t e r i o r l i fe o f t h e b u i l d i n g a n d s e e k s a c e r t a i n k i n d o f ‘ t r a n s p a r e n c y ’ ; t h e
apartment arrangement both defines and is defined by the structural order of the building and clearly reveals
itself outwards.
