GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Call to Worship
One: Holy and generous is God, the Creator of all things.
All: Loving and gracious is Christ, the Bearer of healing and hope.
One: Gentle and wise is the Holy Spirit, the Breath of new life.
All: Trinity of grace, we call on you today.
One: Come and worship the God who made us and loves us all!
All: We come with joyful praise and hopeful hearts!

Prayer of Adoration
Creator God, You have made a world of such amazing diversity – with unique living things
we cannot number! We praise you for such wonder. You have created such amazing
diversity in humankind – through culture and language, custom and community, expressed
in so much creativity and compassion. We praise you for such wonder. In Jesus Christ,
you show us how much you love your creation and how we can live by your love. By the
power of your Spirit, give us new eyes to behold the wonders you have made and teach us
how to love your creation with humble, grateful hearts. AMEN

*Hymn
Let All Things Now Living
Let all things now living
a song of thanksgiving
to God our Creator triumphantly raise;
who fashioned and made us,
protected and stayed us,
by guiding us on to the end of our days.
2
God's banners are o'er us;
pure light goes before us,
a pillar of fire shining forth in the night:
till shadows have vanished,
all fearfulness banished,
as forward we travel from light into light.
By law God enforces,
the stars in their courses,
]the sun in its orbit obediently shine;
the hills and the mountains,
the rivers and fountains,
the depths of the ocean proclaim God divine.
We too should be voicing
our love and rejoicing;
with glad adoration, a song let us raise,
till all things now living
united in thanksgiving:
to God in the highest, hosanna and praise!

Prayer of Confession
Creator God, The diversity in your creation amazes us, but we confess we often prefer
what seems familiar. We’d like everyone to speak our language. We wish others held
our values and shared our customs. We fail to see how our own preferences affect
others and the earth itself in harmful ways. Forgive our easy assumptions, and teach
us to listen to the stories others tell with open minds and hearts. AMEN

Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
*Affirmation of Faith 1 Corinthians 13:4-13
I believe Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant 5 or
rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice
in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. 7 It bears all things, believes all things, hopes
all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come
to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. 9
For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; 10 but when the complete
3
comes, the partial will come to an end. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I
thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to
childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face.
Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 And
now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Old Testament
Psalms 100
Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come into
his presence with singing. 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he that made us, and we are
his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and
his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name. 5 For the LORD is good; his
steadfast love endures for ever, and his faithfulness to all generations.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1989)

Reading from the New Testament

Romans 5:1-8
Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus
Christ, 2 through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we
boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also boast in our
sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character,
and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has
been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. 6 For while we
were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Indeed, rarely will anyone die
for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to
die. 8 But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.

Bless His Holy Name
To God be the Glory
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me,
bless His holy name. He has done great things,
He has done great things, He has done great things;
bless His holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me, bless His holy name.

To God be the glory- great things He hath done!

So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin
And opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Refrain
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father thro’ Jesus, the Son,
And give Him the glory- great things He hath done!

Great things He hath taught us; great things He hath done,

And great our rejoicing thro’ Jesus, the Son.
But purer and higher and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

Reading from the Gospel

Matthew 9:35-10:8 Selected Verses
Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the
good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. 36 When he saw
the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like
sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the
laborers are few; 38 therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
1 Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to
cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. These twelve Jesus sent out
5
with the following instructions: ‘Go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim
the good news, “The kingdom of heaven has come near.” Cure the sick, raise the dead,
cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

Hymn
Jesus Calls Us
Jesus calls us: o'er the tumult
of our life's wild, restless sea;
day by day his sweet voice soundeth
saying, "Christian, follow me."
Jesus calls us from the worship
of the vain world's golden store,
from each idol that would keep us,
saying, "Christian, love me more."
Jesus calls us: by thy mercies,
Savior, may we hear thy call,
give our hearts to thy obedience,
serve and love thee best of all.

GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD

*Hymn
We Give Thee but Thine Own
We give thee but thine own,
whate'er the gift may be;
all that we have is thine alone,
a trust, O Lord, from thee.
May we thy bounties thus
as stewards true receive,
and gladly, as thou blessest us,
to thee our firstfruits give.
And we believe thy word,
though dim our faith may be;
whate'er we do for thine, O Lord,
we do it unto thee.
Benediction
