3 Calculus I
3 Calculus I
THEOREMS
Learning Outcomes
This module will enable you to:
1. differentiate algebraic functions using theorems
Resource
You will be needing the following for this module:
1. graphing tools like Graphmatica or Graphing Calculator
Expectations
You are expected to
1. follow the guidelines in accomplishing the module
2. accomplish the module completely
𝑫𝒙 (𝒄) = 𝟎
𝑫𝒙 (𝒙𝒏 ) = 𝒏𝒙𝒏−𝟏
3. If 𝒇 is a function, 𝒄 is a constant and 𝒈 is the function defined by 𝒈(𝒙) = 𝒄 ∙ 𝒇(𝒙), then if 𝒇’(𝒙)
exists, 𝒈’(𝒙) = 𝒄 ∙ 𝒇’(𝒙).
𝑫𝒙 [𝒄 ∙ 𝒇(𝒙)] = 𝒄 ∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒇(𝒙)
4. If 𝒇 and 𝒈 are functions and if 𝒉 is the function defined by 𝒉(𝒙) = 𝒇(𝒙) + 𝒈(𝒙), then if 𝒇’(𝒙)
and 𝒈’(𝒙) exist, 𝒉’(𝒙) = 𝒇’(𝒙) + 𝒈’(𝒙).
𝒇(𝒙)
6. If 𝒇 and 𝒈 are functions and if 𝒉 is the function defined by 𝒉(𝒙) = 𝒈(𝒙), where 𝒈(𝒙) ≠ 𝟎, then
𝒈(𝒙)∙𝒇′ (𝒙)−𝒇(𝒙)∙𝒈′(𝒙)
if 𝒇’(𝒙) and 𝒈’(𝒙) exist, 𝒉’(𝒙) = [𝒈(𝒙)]𝟐
.
𝟑𝒙𝟐 +𝟒
Example: Differentiate 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝟓𝒙𝟐 −𝟑𝒙+𝟐
−𝟗𝒙𝟐 −𝟐𝟖𝒙+𝟏𝟐
𝒇’(𝒙) = 𝟐
(𝟓𝒙𝟐 −𝟑𝒙+𝟐)
