Subject: ELA “Writing” Lesson: 3 “Writing a poem”

The lesson review:

What’s “a poem”?

-A poem is a piece of writing in which the words are chosen for their beauty and
sound and are carefully arranged, often in short lines which rhyme.

-Before you start writing plan your draft:

You have to think well of the topic you’re about to write about and determine its
elements. Use descriptive words and phrases for the setting and the people involved
in your poem.
-Use this draft:

Setting: Place and time

Characters: People who shared the story with you

Compare between two places; a place you once lived in
plot: and had some memories and another new one. See how
they’re different.
Words that address the senses:
Words of color ex: green grass, dark clouds
Use sensory words: Words about taste ex: sweet
Words about sound ex: noise, squish
Words about smell ex: roses, smell

Now: You can arrange your words in short lines under each other. It will sound
better if you use rhyming words

1
A model to imitate
Abha’s Days
Air here is different than there in Abha.
No sweet smell of roses, No rain drops
Like pearls washing the green grass,
Only dust and smoke. Out of my window,
I see cars moving rapidly, leaving behind
clouds of smoke.
Already I have stories in my head.
Stories of rain, green and fresh air.
I miss my Abha days

Practice time
-Write your memoir in a form of narrative poem. Use the example above to
generate your example
