ASSIGNMENT 1: PROBLEM SOLVING DISCUSSION

Step 1: What is the nature of the problem facing us - pesent State, obstacles, goals?

During the holiday season, flight prices to East Malaysia tend to rise. Students from
East Malaysia studying in Peninsular Malaysia have reported problems returning
home in time for Hari Raya Aidilfitri. According to a report by Buletin TV3, Ayer Hitam
parliament member Wee Kan Siong, tweeted that the price of a flight ticket from
Kuala Lumpur to Tawau during Hari Raya could increase to as much as RM 3000.
The high cost of plane tickets is preventing many Sabahans from returning home for
Hari Raya, according to a Facebook post by Kinabatangan parliamentarian Datuk
Seri Bung Moktar Radin. The purpose of this discussion is to propose ideas that will
help East Malaysian students who come to Peninsular Malaysia for their studies save
money on airfare during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday.

STEP 2: What might be done to solve the probem? (Brainstorming)

1. Fix the ceiling price of the airline tickets.
2. Special student fare programs.
3. Flexible booking and cancellation policies.
4. The government provides subsidies or incentives for airline tickets.
5. Creating a collaboration with student travel agencies with the airlines.

STEP 3: By What Specific Criteria Shall We Judge Our Possible Solutions?

CRITERIA DESCRIPTION

Affordability The amount of money needed to implement the solution or

suggestion. It should not be not too costly and should be
reasonable.

Repeatability The ability to use the same solution and get the same or similar
results multiple times.

Accessibility The quality of being easy to approach, reach, use, or

understand.
STEP 4: What are the relatives merits of our possible solutions? (Compare each
solution/suggestion according to the criteria outlined in STEP 3 using a table.)Then,
decide on the best solution.

STEP 5: How will we put our decision into effect?
Solution 2 - Student Price/Season Pass for Students

1. Promotion and Awareness: Launch promotional campaigns to create awareness

among students, educational institutions, and the public about the availability and
benefits of the student price/season passes. Use various channels such as social
media, websites, and campus communication to reach the target audience
effectively.
2. Propose to the Government: Propose to the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia
for example to bring this topic over to the Parliament as this is a repetitive problem
every year that needs a prompt solution. In any case, the Government may make this
as a law and make it compulsory to the airlines to have a Special Student Fare
Program more effectively.
3. Make a Petition: Creating a petition among students on other airlines to form a
collaboration with student travel agencies or form a student price/season pass for
students.

Regardless of various airlines, students from East Malaysia still face a lot of obstacles to buy
tickets to go back to their hometown as expensive tickets are the main concern of the issue.
However, this expensive ticket issue can be solved with few solutions but the best for it is
setting up a student price/season for students. This solution can be implemented by a few
methods which are proposed to certain airlines such as AirAsia since there are already other
airlines that have done it. To do so, the airline company itself can make a certain capacity for
student passengers to balance the airline's revenue to avoid losses. Other than that, any
responsible parties could propose to the government to make it as a law for giving Student
Price to ease Students travelling and even students can make a petition on other airlines to
form a collaboration with student travel agencies or form a student price/season pass for
students.
