Offshore routine in Aberdeen
%$"

Aberdeen became famous in the 1970s, when

     $
Since then, the city in Eastern Scotland evolved
to the main supply centre for the offshore drilling
platforms and it is nowadays the main port for
Offshore support and supply vessels in the North
Sea.

Aberdeen is often called the “Silver City”, because

since the 12th century many houses were built from
granite, the latter deriving from stone quarries
nearby. You can watch this phenomenon best when
 $
 $     <
'
the shimmering granite. The city is famous for its
“Union Street”, too. On a distance of about 0,8
miles there are many stores and pubs, and you
can visit historical sites like churches. If you come
to Aberdeen by ship, you are always in a good
position: no matter where you are on anchor, the
city is always in walking distance.

Mooring times of several days are always used to do

all kinds of preparations, repairs and maintenance
onboard (everything you simply cannot do, when
you are sailing). Safety is a big issue as well,
because after leaving port, you cannot simply call

for help, if you want to. You are left on your own.
Therefore, there are safety and security trainings
every week, like “Fast Rescue Boat-Training”, “Man
over Board-Training” as well as “Fire Fighting” and
“Abandon Ship”. These drills usually take place on
Saturdays, while the maintenance is done during the
week.

There are different jobs to do for an Anchor Handling

Tug Supply vessel in Aberdeen, for example “cargo
runs”. This means loading containers with supply
for the drilling platforms, like food or tools. You set
course for the platform, discharge and return the
empty container back to Aberdeen. The discharging is
quick, because the rigs have their own cranes.

The second type of job includes anchor handling and

rig moves. Anchor handling means to lift a rig’s anchor,

   $
#% $'%
- our vessels’ winches have a bollard pull of about 200
t, and they need it! The anchor is heaved to onboard
a vessel and separated from its chain. The rig later
on hauls in the chain. When all eight anchors of a rig
have been lifted (by several tugs), the rig is towed to
its new position. The game starts all over again, but
the other way round: The chain and the anchor are
connected and then the anchor is let down exactly at
the new position.

Anchor handling is all about teamwork. The jobs are

neither easy nor lack risks, therefore, cooperation
and trust are essential. All Hartmann Offshore crews
therefore do the Basic Safety Refresher Trainings
' >' ?

week in a special training centre in the Netherlands,
where they practise Salvage and Fire Fighting-
trainings, but there are leisure time activities as
well. Basically, teamwork is the skill that we need
most, and that we train there all day. This makes a
crew bond quickly, because we are all dependant on
one another.

On 20th August, 2010, two weddings took place in Leer. Beautiful sunny weather
accompanied this special day.

First, Gesine Frerichs said “yes” and is now Mrs. Rahmann-Frerichs. A little later Ann-
Kristin Graf got married and is now called Mrs. Siewert. Both had gorgeous celebrations
with their families and friends. We wish them all the best for their future lives!

Taking this opportunity we would like to give both of them the possibility to introduce
themselves:
