INTRODUCTION

A classification essay is best defined or understood as a type of essay that deals with the
classification of connections that are logical and organized. The author of the essay must
organize all the specific contents of the essay into categories. Each category is meant to give
the reader a better understanding of the topic of that particular essay. It is also known as a
logical division essay because it breaks or divides a larger, complex topic into smaller ones
that make the topic easier to understand and read.

The classification essay is an academic paper that classifies ideas, characters, or objects with
shared characteristics either in groups or also in specific categories. This report is composed
of a definition and purpose of the classification essay, the structure of the essay which is
organized by the introductory paragraph, the body of the essay and the conclusion, the
different types of the classification essay that can be elaborated on, the similarities and
differences of the classification essay with the narrative, and process essays, tips, and
suggestions, steps to be followed for its elaboration and an example of the classification essay
made by the working group from own ideas.

3. THESE ESSAY ELEMENTS (PURPOSE, COMPONENTS, VARIATIONS IN

THE STRUCTURE ETC)
Purpose:

A classification essay is intended to divide general topics into more specific parts by
classifying objects with similarities into a common standard. The purpose of a classification
essay is to divide general topics into smaller, manageable, and specific categories.
Components:

Introductory paragraph: This describes the main topic in which the essay will be written, if
the selected topic has been selected it must be made clear from the beginning, this will make
it easier for readers to understand the purpose of the essay. To end this paragraph, the thesis
sentence should include the points that are examined and related.

The body paragraph: Of the essay is composed of three paragraphs depending on the
subcategories that have been chosen within the thesis sentence, start each paragraph with a
topic sentence, this Will be used as a starting point to identify the subcategory that will be
discussed. Within each paragraph there should be a fluid transition so that each of the
paragraphs is connected, they can be ordered from the most known subtopics to the less
known or vice versa, always paying attention that they have a logic between them.
The conclusion: This should bring together all the categories that have been addressed within
the body of the essay, detailing a brief critique or final comment, which should not be
repetitive and should be different from those found within the body of the essay. This gives
the reader the guidelines to understand that it is the final part of the essay, it should also
ensure that the conclusion clearly emphasizes what has been the purpose of conducting the
research.
Variations:
Among the types of classification essays, we have:

✓ Parts: The classification based on parts breaks down the main topic into subtopics.
✓ Types: In this type of classification essay, the topic is broken down into the main
subject types
✓ Characteristics: The essay describes several significant characteristics of the
selected topic and subcategories. 5. Chronology: this type of essay divides the essay
topic according to various periods.1

5. THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING YOUR ESSAY
1. Choose the topic

In case you have not been assigned a topic, the first thing you should do is brainstorm ideas.
because there are topics that are more appropriate than others for this kind of essay. Try to
think of issues that can be broken down. Make a list of topics you know a lot about. Your
experience will be a great help.

2. Establish categories

Decide how you are going to group the information and what the categories will be. Make
sure the categories are consistent, unique (meaning they should not overlap), and complete.
3. The first draft

Introduction. Identifies your topic, in this case, the group you are classifying. If you have
reduced your topic in any way (for example, modalities of international cooperation), make
this clear from the beginning. Finally, include a thesis statement (usually at the end of the
introduction) that briefly identifies the main types of approaches you are about to examine.

Body Paragraphs. The body of your essay will be three paragraphs. Each paragraph should
deal with a different category. Begin each body paragraph with a topic sentence that identifies
a particular type of approach. Then illustrate each type with specific details.

Conclusion. The final paragraph allows you to bring together the various types and
approaches you have been examining in the body of the essay. You may choose to offer a
brief concluding comment on each, summarizing its value or limitations. Or you may wish
to recommend one approach over the others and explain why. In either case, make sure your
conclusion clearly emphasizes the purpose of your classification. 2

4. Check for correct spelling, grammar, and wording.

Remember that this is an academic essay, and these details add to or diminish the credibility
of your writing.

6. TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR WRITING A CLASSIFICATION ESSAY

• Choose your categories carefully: Sort things into useful categories, Include the most
important categories so that your essay is not incomplete, but do not choose too many
because the idea will be lost, and the classification will be blurred.

• Make sure that all categories follow a single organizing principle: Once you have
categories, make sure they fit into the same organizing principle. The organizing
principle refers to how the groups are arranged. Don't let a different principle appear
unexpectedly. For example, if your unifying principle is International financial
organizations, do not include international military or humanitarian organizations.

• Support each category equally with examples: In general, you should write the same
amount, and give the same number of examples, for each category. The most
important category, usually reserved for the last, may require more elaboration.

• Divide broad topics into more specific parts. Explain how the classification essay
topic relates to the subcategories.

• Identify the salient features of each category: Provide a clear division based on
characteristics. An item cannot belong to two categories at the same time. Provide a
logical order of the categories. You can start with the most important and end with
the least important or vice versa.

• Hooking the conclusion to the introduction of contrasting categories, these

connections help unify an essay and give it a sense of integrity.

• As you develop and organize your draft, experiment with multiple strategies, but keep
in mind this basic format: an introduction that identifies your topic and the different
types of approaches; three (or more) body paragraphs that draw on specific details to
describe or illustrate the types; and a conclusion that brings your points together and
makes clear the overall purpose of the classification.3

Modalities of international cooperation for the development.

International Cooperation is the relationship established between two or more countries,

agencies, or civil society organizations, to achieve agreed development goals. It also refers
to all actions and activities carried out between nations or civil society organizations aimed
at contributing to the development process of societies in developing countries. In this way,
cooperation can take place in different modalities such as financial, technical, and
humanitarian cooperation.4

4
BARRETT, Scott. A theory of full international cooperation. Journal of Theoretical Politics, 1999, vol. 11, no 4, p. 519-
541. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0951692899011004004 (Accessed March 31, 2022)
Currently, most developed countries are committed to collaborating with international
cooperation, as it is part of the commitments adopted in the United Nations Charter, and one
way to materialize this commitment is through international financial cooperation. This is
understood as any transfer granted for the financing of activities aimed at the development
of the recipient country that is channeled in the form of financial resources, i.e., credits or
donations, or real contents, such as the sale or donation of goods and services, transferred
from the donor countries to the beneficiaries. An example of this modality is the donation
that the Japan International Cooperation Agency gave to the governments of El Salvador and
Honduras, in support of Central American integration, donating funds for the construction of
the Amistad, in the amount of US$11.2 million.5

In addition, there is technical cooperation, which incorporates the transfer of techniques,

technologies, knowledge, or experiences from more developed countries and multilateral
organizations to strengthen existing national capacities in developing countries. an example
of this is the exchange of technical knowledge with authorities of the Port of Lázaro
Cárdenas, Mexico, within the framework of the strategic project of the Presidency of the Port
Network.
But there is a type of cooperation that is more immediate, although it is still well structured,
we refer to humanitarian aid. is considered as assistance designed to save lives, alleviate
suffering and maintain and protect human dignity, in the prevention of emergency and/or
rehabilitation situations. According to the United Nations, to be classified as a humanitarian,
aid must be consistent with the principles of humanity, impartiality, and independence, in
addition to neutrality. an example of this is the camps for refugees from war-torn countries.6

Although these forms of aid are not perfect and have their shortcomings, it cannot be denied
that they have fulfilled, at least partially, their mission since they complement each other,
financial aid makes possible the realization of different projects of knowledge exchange in
developed countries, and without humanitarian aid, it would not be possible to help in
emergency cases that need more speed. we know that the subject of international cooperation
is huge, exciting, and very complex, therefore it is impossible to cover it all in a single text,
what is possible is to give a few brushstrokes on three of the most common modalities through
which it is channeled.
