MacDonald focused on westward development after realizing American threat Idea was to get farmers to the West Farmers would produces wheat. Wheat would be transferred by rail Shipped to rest of British Empire More settlers decided to move west with the promise of land. Shortly after settler started disputes with Indians Indians forced onto reserves Tribes that lived in the West The Cree The Ojibways The Saulteus The Assiniboines The Blackfoot Indians hunted buffalo Soon buffalo started to disappear Fur trade was popular Indians began addicted to whiskey. 1873 North West Mounted Police formed Federal government violated Treaty No. 6 Indians wanted equal rights. 1876 Indian Act Federal government had to protect Indians and gain their trust. 1880s great advertising of the West Thousands went to the west Cheap land Life was difTicult in the west Extreme heat and mosquitoes killed many Winters were cold, and summers had Tires Quebecers Tled to New England Called Chinese of the East North West Rebellion - 1885 Indians were extremely mad at the government Louis Riel returns Metis and Indians want to negotiate with Ottawa. Metis and farmers were upset. Federal government was not meeting expectations People to work with Riel Riel does not want to Tight Ottawa and want to work politically
