The assessment will cover content and skills from the topics​ Water in the World​ and ​Interconnections
which you have studied this semester. This assessment will be an in class examination consisting of three
parts: multiple choice, short answer and an extended response. Time allowed - 50 minutes plus 5 mins
NATURE OF reading time
TASK:
Section I: Multiple Choice - 15 marks.
In-class task Section II: Short Answers - 15 marks.
Section III: Extended response – 10 marks.

You will be required to respond to a range of questions - multiple choice, short answer and extended
response questions based on the geographical skills and content you are studying in BOTH units, ​Water in
the World​ and ​Interconnections. Bring a ruler to the examination.

Section I will examine your understanding of key geographical skills - see the list below for revision.

Section II will be short-answer questions and will assess your ability to write a coherent response to unseen
questions based on content you have learnt in the units.

Section III will be an extended response using both stimulus material and own knowledge. The question will
be as follows:

Explain the different ways in which people feel a connection to various places. In your response, provide
examples of how people may be connected to different places for different reasons. You must refer to at least
TWO sources provided for you.

Ensure that you have an understanding of the following:


● How to calculate distance on a map
● How to calculate latitude and longitude
● How to calculate direction using a 16 point compass
● How to identify the scale on a map
● How to identify area and grid references
● How to identify features on a map using a key, including isobars
● How to read and interpret climate graphs
● How to identify different types of maps and visual representations eg photographs

● Writing an extended PEEL response.


● Practise answering questions that ask you to describe, explain, etc. (Refer to page 127 in your
diary).
● Review key terms, concepts and definitions.
● Review key geographical skills listed above.
● Revise your knowledge and understanding of the content of the two topic areas by using the
syllabus points as a guide.

Water in the World​ has 6 focus areas: Water Resources, The Water Cycle, Australia’s Water
Resources, Water Scarcity and Management, The value of water, and Natural Hazard
Interconnections ​has 4 focus areas: Personal connections, Technology, Trade, and Production and
Consumption.

Summaries of these topics are available in GC. Ask your teacher for further reference.

You will be assessed on your ability to:

● Follow the directive terms provided in each question.
