Mid- Exam Fall 2017 Wireless Communication 1Hrs
Inst. Dr. Ali Said Awad

Q.1)
a-
Given a cellular system of a hexagonal cells consists of several clusters
each with N cells and the receiver are at distance D from the other cells
If path loss n=4. Prove that

S
 1.5 N 2
I
b-

Prove that

( r 3 N ) n
Pr  Pt .
d0
where Pt is the transmit power in base station, D is the distance to the
center of the nearest co-channel cells, r is the major radius, d0 is
reference distance

Q.2)
A certain city has an area of 1,300 square kilometers and is covered by a cellular
system using a seven-cell reuse pattern. Each cell has a radius of four kilometers and
the city is allocated 40 MHz of spectrum with a full duplex channel bandwidth of
60 kHz. Assume a GOS of 2% for an Erlang B system is specified. If the
offered traffic per user is 0.03 Erlangs.
compute:
(a) the number of cells in the service area,
(b) the number of channels per cell,
(c) traffic intensity of each cell,
(d) the maximum carried traffic,
(e) the total number of users that can be served for 2% GOS,
(f) the number of mobiles per unique channel
(g) the theoretical maximum number of users that could be served at
one time by the system.

Note: For number of channels =95 and 2% GOS, from Erlang Table, Traffic
intensity per cell=83.13 Erl.

Q.3)
(a) The traffic intensity A for the cell is 1 Erlangs if GOS= 2% and C=20.
Find the probability for the case of delays being greater than 20
seconds. Assume that H = 105 sec
(b) Find the average delay for those calls which are queued in the
system
(c) Determine the probability that the call has not immediate access
to a channel, if the number of the channels becomes C=2 and the
values of A remains constant.

p[delay > t] = p[delay > 0] . exp (− (C −A)t /H )
