Bike Harness Installation Instructions

Kawasaki 2016-2017 ZX-10R / ZX10RR

Kawasaki Harness Type 13a
1) Introduction
To connect your Woolich Racing interface to the ECU (‘Engine Control Unit’ or computer) in
your bike you need to install the bike harness. This is a relatively simple procedure that
involves:

1) Locating the ECU in your bike.

2) Removing the Middle ECU Plug.
3) Installing the 1 Pin Wire from the Extension Harness into the Middle ECU Plug.
4) Connecting the Main Harness.
5) Connecting the Main Harness to the Diagnostics Plug.

The above procedure is described in detail in this guide and should only take approximately
20 minutes to complete. No cutting or splicing of the wiring harness is required for this
install. Please refer to your workshop manual for fairing removal.

Note: When Reading and Writing to the Kawasaki ZX-10R ECU you MUST have a strong
and stable internet connection.

2) Hardware
To install the on bike harness you should have the following hardware as supplied with your
Woolich Racing product:

1) Kawasaki Type 13a Extension Harness.

2) Kawasaki Type 13a Main Harness.

3) Tools
The following tools will be useful when installing the Woolich Racing bike harness:

1) Hex Keys.
2) Small flat head screwdriver (used for removing and installing plug caps, and installing
pins).
3) Split pin, Paper clip, needle or small jewellers screwdriver (used for removing pin
plugs and installing new pins into ECU plug).
4) Socket set with small extension.
4) Kawasaki Extension Harness Type 13a Installation
The following steps describe the installation of the on bike harness:

1) Remove the passenger seat from the bike.

2) Remove the included tool kit by stretching the band and loosening it off of the
retaining hook and then remove the four 4mm hex screws holding the tail plastic on.
Slide it back to remove the plastic. The 4mm bolts have been removed already shown
in the picture below.

3) Remove the 3 Relay’s from the bracket by sliding them up of the bracket.
One Relay is not shown in the photo bit it is marked where it would be with an arrow.
4) Remove the four bolts shown with an 8mm socket and ratchet/driver.

5) Gently remove the bracket and drape it over the side or on the front seat, exposing
the ECU. Note: Some models have a security brackets over the ECU which will
require drilling of rivets for removal.
6) Look beneath the aluminium portion of the rear sub-frame and find the three ECU
connectors.

7) Press the latch on the middle ECU connector and pull it down towards you to free it
from the ECU.
8) Turn the middle ECU connector to find the long white plastic locking tab, press down
with a flat head screwdriver to release the pins.
CAUTION: Be careful not to pull wires or stretch them after the locking tab has been
depressed in order to prevent them from coming loose from the ECU connector.
9) Find PIN 50 on the middle ECU connector, it should be occupied by a white plastic
dust plug.
10) Use a pick or scribe to pull the white plastic dust plug out the backside of the
connector. Or if preferred, a small paper clip can be unwound and inserted in the
connector side of the plug and used to push the plug out the backside of the
connector.
CAUTION: If pressing it out, please check twice to ensure you’re pressing out the right
pin and there are no metal pins in the position you’re attempting to push out!
11) Follow the table below to ensure the correct location of the wire. It may be
necessary to use a small screw driver or pick to very gently push the pin all the way
into the connector. Make sure the pin is inserted correctly or it will damage the
connector and will not communicate with the ECU. When the pin has been fully
inserted into the connector you will hear a faint audible click. Failure to seat the pin
fully in the connector will not allow you to flash the ECU even though engine data will
work. Check the ECU side of the plug to ensure that the pin has been fully inserted.

Yellow Wire ECU Pin 50

12) Insert the Kawasaki Type 13a Extension Harness into pin position 50 of the ECU
connector. Check several times to ensure it is fully seated.
13) Turn the connector over to show the front and make sure you can see the metal pin
receptacle at the top of the ECU connector
14) Find the two white small plastics tabs raised on the outside of the ECU connector.

15) Use the flat head screwdriver to press them down flat, this locks the pins into place
in the connector.
16) Connect the middle ECU connector back on the ECU making sure it latches and locks
into the ECU.

17) Route the single wire extension harness back and under the aluminium bar on the
rear subframe, bringing it up and over the metal bar where the rear seat/cowl
latches.
18) Move the single wire extension harness off to the side and put the ECU
bracket/cover back on and tighten it down with the 8mm bolts removed earlier.
Also reinstall the relays by sliding them back on the bracket (one relay not shown
but its location still shown with an arrow).
19) Find the KDS (Kawasaki Diagnostic System) connector. It is slid into a piece of foam.
Press it backwards and remove it from the foam.
20) With the KDS connector removed from the foam, release the latches on the plastic
cap so the KDS connector is open and able to be connected to with the main
harness.
21) With the cap removed, connect the KDS plug to the matching KDS Plug on the
Kawasaki Type 13a Main Harness. You should hear/feel a faint ‘click” when it’s
locked.
22) Take the one wire extension harness that is connected to the ECU and connect it to
the main harness. Press the two together so you see the latch on hook join up and
there is no yellow dust seal showing.
23) Plug your Woolich Racing Interface into the 8 pin Molex Connector on the Kawasaki
Type 13a Main Harness.

5) Final Installation
Reassemble any components you may have taken off your bike during the install, and now
your hardware should be ready to start flashing your ECU.

Notes: A strong and stable internet connection is required when Reading and Writing to
the ECU. Failure to do so may cause commination issues.

Follow all on screen prompts when Reading and Writing to the ECU.
