CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researchers used a qualitative type of research that focuses on determining

the factors and experiences rather than statistical. The research utilizes

phenomenological design. Phenomenological design refers to the method wherein the

researchers investigates the everyday experiences of the participants as they focus on

the experiences in a certain phenomenon. As Giorgi (1985), Van Manen (1990),

Moustakas (1994), and other phenomenologists have stated, interviewing individuals who

experience specific phenomena is the foundation source that phenomenological

investigation relies on to understand the phenomenon.

Research Environment

This study is conducted in a particular school of Cebu, Tisa National High School.

It is located at F. Llamas St., Cebu City. The school principal is Dr. Roy C. Generes

together with Dr. Jacqueline M. Gabucan as the assistant principal of the Senior High

School Department. The school offers both Junior High and Senior High school. Tisa

National High School implements Senior High School and offers Academic and Technical

Vocational Livelihood Tracks namely Accountancy, Business, and Management(ABM),

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics(STEM), General Academic

Strand(GAS), Electrical Installation and Maintenance(EIM), Electronic Products

Assembly and Servicing(EPAS), Bread and Pastry Production(BPP), and Information and
Communication Technology(ICT). There are 26 teachers in Tisa Senior High School

Department.

Research Informant

The respondents of this research are the Senior High School (Grade 11) students

of Tisa National High School. These students are under both Academic and Technical

Vocational Livelihood Tracks. The students will be requested to read and sign a consent

form as their proof of willingness to join the interview conducted by the researchers.

Research Instrument

The research instruments are the tools that the researcher uses to collect data. A

research instrument captures each variable in terms of its theoretical definition (Polit &

Beck, 2012). The researchers prepare an interview protocol where interview are semi-

constructed. All sessions are video taped to facilitate recording of the interactive process.

The information is based from the students’ interviews that are recorded, transcribed, and

coded for thematic analysis. This method is consists of four steps:

1. Read and Annotate the transcripts;

2. Identify Themes

3. Developing a coding scheme;

4. Coding the data

Research Procedure

Data collection
The researcher will request Dr. Roy C. Genares, the principal of Tisa National High

School, in writing permission to collect data for this study. The researchers would create

an interview guide with input from the panel of subject matter experts. Participants will

receive a letter from the researcher requesting their assistance in the collection of various

data for the study.

Data Analysis

Individual interviews will be used to analyze the data utilizing the

phenomenological technique of research.
