THE SECOND
Nonrhythmic Exercises
Play the first note of each exercise on the piano, then try to sing
through the entire exercise without accompaniment. Do it slowly at first, #
then increase speed with each successive repetition. A dash over a note
means that it should be held a bit longer than the others.*

Strike and Sing
Strike the notated pitch on the piano and then follow the instruc-
tions given. Do not play the pitch you are to sing on the piano until
after you have sung it. The piano should be used only as a check of
accuracy. Do these exercises very slowly and deliberately at first, then
increase the speed gradually. y
* Throughout this book, the accidental continues to apply if a pitch is repeated im.
mediately and if there is no rest to separate the notes.
