Activity 3: New Literacies, Functional Literacies, and Multiliteracy

1. What is meant by new literacies? What is their impact on the teaching-learning process?
 New literacies encompass ways of thinking about information and experiences,
processing with others to challenge and continuously update thinking, and
demonstrating new ideas, solutions, and understandings in the manner that best suits
the situation. The impact of new literacies on the teaching-learning process is to
understand that learning is a process, and it requires them to take ownership of their
learning and value reading. And using new literacies eliminates student frustration and
discouragement.
2. Describe a multiliterate teacher.
 A multiliterate teacher understands the many ways that technology interacts and
intertwines with academic and interpersonal life, and actively learns how to gain
control over those aspects impacting teaching, social, and professional development.
3. Distinguish between basic and functional literacy.
 Basic literacy can be termed as the form of abilities to read, write and do basic
arithmetic or numeracy. Functional literacy refers to the capacity of a person to engage
in all activities which requires effective functioning.
4. How can we integrate new literacies and functional literacy in the curriculum and in classroom
practice?
 We can integrate new literacies and functional literacy in the curriculum and in
classroom practices by providing learners to engage with new literacies as it helps to
improve their motivational learning skills.
