Properties of Matter
Candy Lab

During our transdisciplinary theme, third grade scientists learn that matter has observable,
physical properties and comes in many different shapes, colors, materials and sizes.

During our line of inquiry 2, students learnt that properties can be observed, measured, and
tested. We focused on the fact that engineers, designers, and architects consider the properties
of the materials they want to use to determine if they are right for a job. Engineers measure
the strength, durability, and even flexibility of the materials they use. They also measure size.
To add a math element to our cracker and candy lab, students can use a ruler to measure the
length or width of their crackers and candies, so they can record the measurements of their lab
sheets.

METACOGNITION:

I followed instructions to do this activity.

I learnt which the properties of matter are.

I completed my observations and answered the questions.

I used my Skill: Research

MY REFLECTION: I worked the key concept of: ______________________________________
And the related concept of: _______________________________________
I used the ATL skill of _____________________________________________
The IB attribute that I demonstrated was _________________________

What I would like to learn about the second line of inquiry “The effects that arise from
the different alterations of matter” is
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________
________________________________

I found the experiment:

1. Interesting

2. Boring
