COURSE OBJECTIVE:
This course introduces fundamental concepts in Calculus to the engineering students. In this
course we will cover the calculus of real valued functions. The objectives of this course are:
COURSE OUTLINE:
Complex numbers: Basic operations, graphical representations, polar and exponential forms
of complex numbers, De Moivre’s theorem with applications. Hyperbolic functions,
exponential functions and their relationships in trigonometric identities. Review of
differentiation, successive differentiation, Leibniz theorem, applications, equations of
tangents and normal, curvature, radius and centre of curvature, maxima and minima of
functions, applications, curve tracing in rectangular and polar coordinates. Partial
differentiation, partial differential coefficients, chain rule, differentiation of implicit
functions, total differential, Euler’s theorem, applications to small errors and approximations,
Taylor’s theorem of one & two independent variables (without proof) and applications.
Review of techniques of integration definite integrals and their properties, gamma and beta
functions.
