LESSON OBJECTIVES

Differentiate between quantitative and

qualitative research;
Explain why both types of research are
important in the field of education; and
Discuss the advantages and
disadvantages of each type of research
PRACTICAL RESEARCH 1

QUANTITATIVE
VS.
QUALITATIVE
RESEARCH
QUANTITATIVE
Quantitative research is used to measure and quantify
behavior. This type of research relies on numerical data to
draw conclusions and make predictions. It is used to
understand how certain variables interact with each other
and how changes in one variable affect another.
ADVANTAGES
Highly structured and well
organized, making it easier to
analyze and interpret data
Provides a more objective view of
the data, which can help
researchers draw more accurate
conclusions
Provides more reliable results
compared to qualitative research
DISADVANTAGES
Can be expensive and time-
consuming.
The results of quantitative research
can be limited in terms of
understanding the context and
meaning behind the data.
Can also be overly rigid, making it
difficult to adjust to changing
conditions and situations
QUALITATIVE
Qualitative research is used to explore and understand
people’s beliefs, experiences, attitudes, and behaviors.
This type of research relies on qualitative data to gain
insight into the subject matter.
ADVANTAGES
Less expensive and time-
consuming than quantitative
research.
Provides an in-depth
understanding of the context and
meaning behind the data.
More flexible, allowing researchers
to adjust to changing conditions
and situations
DISADVANTAGES

Not as reliable as quantitative

research.
Can be difficult to analyze and
interpret as it is less structured
Can also be affected by researcher
bias
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
INSTRUMENTS
Surveys are a type of research method
that involves asking a predetermined set
of questions to a group of people in
order to gather information about their
opinions, behaviors, or experiences.
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
INSTRUMENTS
Experiments allow researchers to test a
specific hypothesis to determine the
cause-and-effect relationship between
two or more variables.
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
INSTRUMENTS
Observational studies involve observing
and recording the behavior of
participants in a given situation without
manipulating it or attempting to control
it in any way.
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
INSTRUMENTS
Interviews are a type of qualitative
research in which the researcher
conducts in-depth conversations with
participants in order to gather detailed
information about their experiences,
opinions, and behaviors.
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
INSTRUMENTS
Focus groups involve bringing together a
small group of people to discuss a
specific topic in order to gain an
understanding of the participants’
attitudes, opinions, and behaviors.
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
INSTRUMENTS
Participant observation is a type of
qualitative research in which the
researcher immerses themselves in the
setting or context of the research in
order to gain an understanding of the
participants’ behaviors and attitudes.
ACTIVITY
Draw a Venn Diagram. Compare
and contrast quantitative and
qualitative research.
