Solids of Revolution - Slicing Method

Example 1: Solid of revolution about x-axis (Disk)

Find the volume of the solid obtained by rotation about the x-axis the region under the curve of y  x
from 0 to 1.

Example 2: Solid of revolution about y-axis (Disk)

Find the volume of the solid obtained by rotating the region bounded by y  x3 , y = 8, and x = 0 about the
y-axis.
Washer/Rings
For examples 3 through 5: The region enclosed by the curves y = x and y = x2
Example 3: Region is rotated about the x-axis. Find the volume of the resulting solid.

Example 4: Region is rotated about the line y = 2. Find the volume of the resulting solid.

Example 5: Region is rotated about the line x = -1. Find the volume of the resulting solid.
Slicing method using other cross section shapes
Example 6: A square-based pyramid
A pyramid 3m high has congruent triangular sides and a square base that is 3m on each side. Each cross
section of the pyramid parallel to the base is a square. Find the volume of the pyramid.

Example 7: Circular base with equilateral triangle cross sections

The figure below is a solid with a circular base of radius 1 ( x2  y 2  1 ). Parallel cross sections
perpendicular to the base are equilateral triangles. Find the volume of the solid.
