Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Bullying is a widespread issue that has far-reaching consequences, particularly in

the context of education. This research aims to examine the impact of bullying on the academic
performance of selected grade 10 students. By investigating this topic, we can gain valuable
insights into the relationship between bullying and academic outcomes, thereby highlighting the
need for effective intervention strategies. This research focuses specifically on Grade 10 students
and their experiences with bullying in relation to academic performance. The study will be
conducted within a selected school, ensuring representation from diverse backgrounds. The
findings of this research may have implications for Grade 10 students in similar educational
settings. The outcome of this study can benefit a wide range of stakeholders. This study will
benefit students, educators, school administrators, parents and families, policymakers,
educational authorities, and future researchers. Bullying, particularly physical, verbal, or
psychological abuse, can have a significant impact on students’ academic performance and
development. “Bullying among adolescents negatively affects the victims in relation to their
emotional, physical, social, and overall health status.” (Yusuf & Habibie, 2019) Grade 10
students are particularly vulnerable to bullying and should be studied to identify and detrimental
effects on their academic performance and formulate targeted support mechanisms. “Bullying is
recognized as a significant problem that negatively impacts school-aged children worldwide.”
(Laith & Vaillancourt, 2022) Understanding the impact of bullying on academic performance is
essential for developing effective interventions and support systems. This will help educators and
policymakers design evidence-based strategies to create safer and more inclusive learning
environments. The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of bullying on the academic
performance of selected Grade 10 students and to prevent the increasing rate of bullying that
affects the students’ academic performance. There is a significant negative relationship between
bullying and the academic performance of selected Grade 10 students. This study will employ a
combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods to gather comprehensive data.
Academic records, standardized test scores, self-report questionnaires, and interviews will be
utilized to collect relevant information on students’ academic performance and experiences with
bullying. The possible outcome of this research is to successfully identify all the effects of
bullying on the academic performance of the selected Grade 10 students.
