OF MATERIALS
TUTORIAL SHEET A1.1

QUESTION 1:
a) Represent each of the following combinations of units in the correct SI form:
i. kN/ms,
ii. Mg/μN
iii. MN/(kg · ms)
iv. Mg/mm
v. mN/μs
vi. μm.Mg
b) Convert the following while express the result to three significant figures. Use an
appropriate prefix
i. 200 lb·ft to N·m
ii. 350 lb/ft 3 to kN/m3
iii. 8 ft/h to mm/s.
c) Evaluate each of the following to three significant figures and express each answer in SI
units using an appropriate prefix:
i. (684 mm)/(43 ms)
ii. (28 ms)(0.0458 Mm)/(348 mg)
iii. (2.68 mm)(426 Mg).

QUESTION 2:
a) Atmosphere pressure at sea level is 14.7 lb/in2. How many Pascals is this?
b) If a man weighs 155 lb on earth, specify
i. His mass in slugs
ii. His mass in kilograms
iii. His weight in newtons.
iv. If the man is on the moon, where the acceleration due to gravity is 𝑔𝑚 =
5.30 𝑓𝑡/𝑠 2 , determine his weight in pounds.
v. His mass in kilograms based on the information in (iv).

QUESTION 3:
a) The vertical force F acts downward at A on the two membered frame shown in the figure
below. Determine the magnitudes of the two components of F directed along the axes of
AB and AC if:-
i. F = 555 N
ii. F = 822 kips

b) For the figure shown below

i. Resolve the force 𝐹2 into components acting along the u and v axes and determine
the magnitudes of the components.
ii. Determine the magnitude of the resultant force 𝐹𝑅 = 𝐹1 + 𝐹2 and its direction,
measured clockwise from the positive u axis.

QUESTION 4:
a) Determine the angle u for connecting member A to the plate so that the resultant force of
𝐹𝐴 and 𝐹𝐵 is directed horizontally to the right. Also, what is the magnitude of the resultant
force?

b) Force F acts on the frame such that its component acting along member AB is 650 lb,
directed from B towards A. Determine the required angle ∅ (00 ≤ ∅ ≤ 450 ) and the
component acting along member BC. Set 𝐹 = 850 𝑙𝑏 and 𝜃 = 300

c) Determine the design angle ∅ (00 ≤ ∅ ≤ 900 ) between struts AB and AC so that the 400
lb horizontal force has a component of 600 lb which acts up to the left, in the same direction
as from B towards A. Take 𝜃 = 300 .

QUESTION 5
