Laboratory Activity 6
Performance of a Water Pump

I. Introduction

A pump is a device that moves fluids (liquids or gases), or sometimes slurries, by mechanical
action, typically converted from electrical energy into hydraulic energy. Pumps come in a variety of
shapes and sizes, and are used in a wide range of applications.

On the other hand, Centrifugal pumps are a versatile type of pump that can be used in a wide
range of applications. They are relatively simple to operate and maintain, and are available in a
variety of sizes and capacities. Centrifugal pumps are a good choice for applications where high flow
rates are required.

II. Objectives

After this laboratory exercise, the student will be able to:

a. evaluate the performance of a water pump; and
b. familiarize with the operation of a water pump.

III. Methodology

This report analyzes the effectiveness of a pump in a rice field for irrigation. For students to
study the performance of the pump, a field with about 1.8 hectares at Malainen, Luma, Naic, Cavite,
where a portion of 1.8 hectares of area the laboratory performed. Using the available pump, it was
used for a field performance test.

Together with this referring to the PAES-115-2000, actual testing was conducted accordingly,
where Overall Dimension, Fuel
consumption, and Volumetric
Efficiency. And also, using a
tachometer, the speed of the pulley
was determined and utilized a 4
different pulley combination to vary
the speed of the pump. In addition,
develop an equation from the
graph using regression analysis.
Using the developed equation, the
students are able to determine the
possible discharge with speed. On the other hand, interpolation for the pump efficiency is done,
utilizing the table 1.
IV. Results and Discussion

Sir Rodolfo Tibayan's 1.8-hectare farm was used for performance testing of a pump. The farm
is used for rice cultivation, which takes about four months and two weeks. When the land needs to
rest, pechay is used as an alternative crop. The transplanting is done manually, and the yield is about
60 kilograms per cavan of rice.

Moreover, in their farm, a centrifugal pump is the available and operating pump in the field.
The centrifugal pump utilizing the rice field is TS-100 with a capacity of 80 m3 per hour and a power of
6 horsepower and speed of 2200 revolutions per minute. However, it is powered by a diesel engine,
from kubota, RK70-s model and based on the specification of the engine, it has a maximum output/
speed 5.22 kW (7.0 HP)/ 2400 revolution per minute. With a displacement of 0.376 L.

a. Overall dimension
The TS-100 centrifugal pump is a high-performance pump that can be used for a variety of
applications, including water supply, irrigation, and fire protection. It has a maximum capacity of 80
cubic meters per hour and a maximum head of 18 meters. The overall dimensions of the pump are
1000mm x 500mm x 300mm. Moreover, observed height is 16.05 inch and the circumference of the
discharge nozzle is 38 cm .

The TS-100 pump is made from high-quality materials and is designed to be durable and
reliable. It has a cast iron body and a stainless steel impeller.

b. Fuel Consumption
According to the farmer the fuel consumption is six (6) liters per eight (8) hours of working
hours, whereas, they are only discharging water in the field once a week.

c. Volumetric Efficiency
Table 2. Efficiency of pump.
Based on table 2, it shows that the pump has an efficiency of 48% from three trials of
the container method - volume method. Wherein, the bucket has the capacity of 10 L. The resulting
discharge is converted to gallons per minute.

Table 3. Final Speed of the shaft.

It is notable that through the incorporation of the digits from the student number, the
speed is varying. Moreover, from the container method-volume method, discharge of the water from
the pump is determined, as shown in table 3, with an average result of 5.305 Liter per second.
