INTRO:

1. The United Nations is an international organization dedicated to protecting the world from
another world war and genocide. It is made up of 193 member states, all of which agree to
provide resources and contribute to the battle for world peace and prosperity. Founded on
October 24, 1945, it aimed to replace the League of Nations, which failed to bring true stability
and peace to the world after World War I. He submitted the first Universal Declaration of
Human Rights at the time.  primary role was the maintenance of international peace as well as
security The League of Nations sought to maintain world peace, but had many shortcomings
that the United Nations had made significant improvements. However, the United Nations has
been in effect for over 70 years and there is currently a debate as to whether it is still
effective. The United Nations is outdated and needs to be updated with guidelines to reflect
today's world. The United Nations has been ineffective in recent years due to the structure of
the Security Council, lack of involvement in important global situations, and the different
priorities of its stakeholders.

2. Over the past 30 years, the United Nations has played an important role in peacekeeping
operations and is the largest international peacekeeping organization in the world. UN intervention
has taken many forms in global conflict. Resolution requires parties to end hostilities and to help
initiate negotiations and mediate. “A resolution is the official expression of the opinion or will of
the United Nations” (United Nations, 2018). Most importantly, it can denounce the actions of the
aggressive side by highlighting the problems of other countries. It is also hoped that humanitarian
aid and assistance will be initiated and lead to resolution of the situation.

3. The United Nations (UN) was established on October 24, 1945 after the world was ravaged by two
brutal wars. The leaders of the western “international community undertook a major initiative
in preventive diplomacy by advocating for the creation of the United Nations” (Peak, 1998, p.3).
The nations that joined the United Nations, all agreed to some common principles as part of
their membership. One of these obligations was to attempt to resolve all conflict peacefully. All
countries joining the United Nations have agreed to some general principles within their member
states. One of these promises was the peaceful resolution of all conflicts. (Peak, 1998). In ,the
United Nations Security Council was established in accordance with the Charter of the United
Nations, whose main role was to maintain international peace as well as security (United Nations,
2019). The first action of the board is to prevent casualties and end hostilities as soon as possible,
usually through cease-fire directives issued by the Security Council (UN, 2019). The UN then has
the option to deploy peacekeepers, coercive measures or economic sanctions (UN, 2019). This essay
will examine where the United Nations has been involved in peacekeeping operations and what has
been involved in its role. This essay will evaluate the UN's ability to resolve conflict and how to
improve it.
