STILL LIFE

The artwork represents the destiny of a flower and that’s going
into its grave. The masterpiece shows how the flower withers
wherein it hangs limply, sad, and droopy. The flowers are
drooping down because of collapsing stems. This scenario
captures the fleeting nature of human life. We spring up like a
sunflower and then wilt. “Like a flower, he comes forth and
withers.” All humans are according to this rant: flowers with
the only purpose of blooming until they wither away. Haven’t
we all felt like we were just a sunflower, happy to bloom but
wondering what else is there? When the leaves and stems start
to collapse, it symbolizes someone losing his strength, vigor,
and assurance. As they wilt and die, flowers represent fragility
and the swift passage from life into death. Death has to
happen. Just like flowers, people come and go. But flowers also
bring a lot of happiness to people when they’re here. And
before they wilt away they’ll share their seeds with the world.
Maybe the wind will take it somewhere for a new batch of
flowers to pop up, or maybe a bee will carry it to a new
destination. But no matter the case, one flower makes a pretty
big impact on the world, and leaves an even bigger legacy.
Representational Art

Reaching Up
The artwork depicts a child who has worked her way up just to
reach the sky. She is holding a paintbrush because she wanted
to paint the sky like how she wanted it to be. Based on this
representational art, the artist (Jewil Meigh) wanted to illustrate
that if we’re hungry for success, we should take an action and
pursue it actively. After all, like the sky that’s wide open, our
future is also completely open and we’re painting it moment to
moment. We’re the ones who hold the pen, writing the path
we’re taking. We’re the ones who draw the direction we choose
for ourselves. We’re also the ones who paint the color of our
journey. We make our own destiny. These are the messages the
artwork wants to communicate to the viewers. The only person
that we’re destined to become is the person we decided to be.
Thus, life isn’t about finding yourself; it’s about creating yourself.
We’re weaving the very fabric of our own lives and we have the
benevolent force that will somehow ensure that everything
works out. Through this masterpiece, the artist is leaving the
viewers with this passage: “I am my own person. I am a thinking
and feeling creature with my own hopes and dreams. I, and I
alone, should decide what my destiny looks like. I and I alone
hold the pen to write and draw my story.”

The artwork incorporates only two colors. These are black
and white but the former is more visually dominant. As you
can see, there’s a human figure standing near the door
and casually looking outside where there’s light. Despite
the house being illuminated by light from the outside,
darkness is still ruling the whole area behind that person
(which is the inner part of the house). "A person who is
more expressive outside is the one who is lonelier inside."
This is the simplest way of explaining what the artwork
portrays. The bright, cozy side where the man is looking
represents what kind of personality he’s showing in front of
other people. He may be outgoing and cheerful but
behind that is the feeling of restlessness and emptiness.
The black void of space behind him expresses his hidden
sorrow and misery. Despite the lightness wanting to
illuminate the whole inner part of the house, it cannot fully
dominate the darkness within that area. It only means that
no matter how carefree that person is and regardless of
the positive disposition that he is showing on the outside,
it’s still not enough to get rid of the desolation that has
been clouding his inner personality. We should not take it
for granted that a cheerful and sociable person may be
immune from depression.
