BY AMANDA MOSES
June is gun violence awareness month during which thousands wear the
color orange to remember those lost in senseless shootings. According to
the organization, Wear Orange, more than 43,000 Americans are killed by
a gun while 76,000 more have been shot every year.
The act of wearing orange has become a symbol of defiance that was
developed in 2013, shortly after 16-year-old Hadiya Pendleton marched in
President Barack Obama’s second inaugural parade. It was one week after
the parade on January 21, 2013, when Pendleton was simply hanging out
in a Chicago playground when she was tragically shot and killed. To honor
her memory, Pendleton’s friends wore orange—a color hunters wear when
out in the woods to protect themselves from being shot.
In light of the pervasive effect gun violence has on New York City,
specifically high-risk zones in Brooklyn, staff and teachers at Abe Stark
Primary School 346 (PS 346) decided to spend an afternoon educating
students regarding anti-gun violence programs and measures through a
schoolwide walk on June 2nd.
“Unfortunately, a large percentage of our parent population has been
effected by gun violence, so we found this march necessary so that we can
raise awareness and hopefully convince our elected officials to pass more
stringent gun laws,” Principal Jabari Edwards explained.
While gun violence is a mature issue for children in pre-k to fifth grade
to comprehend, it is unfortunate that many of them are also already well-
acquainted with the devastation left behind in its wake. Whether that is
through facing gun violence that plagues areas in Brooklyn such as; East
New York, Canarsie, Brownsville, Bedford Stuyvesant and more, or
through continued preparedness that schools must undertake during
mass shooter lockdown measures due to the world as it is.
The schoolwide walk took place at 9 am on June 2nd and saw children
in every grade don orange clothing and march throughout their playground
chanting, “Stop the gun violence” and “Enough is Enough,” while holding
up signs calling for gun safety.
“No more silence, gun violence should be over,” Isadora, 9, said, adding
that she is proud to spread awareness on this issue, but also saddened by
those who have been affected by gun violence.
After the march, students held their signs high for photos heading back
to their classrooms where they discussed the importance of this issue,
something Principal Edwards hopes will serve them well on their journey to
adulthood and perhaps inspire them to become law makers.

On June 6th, Abe Stark Primary School (PS) 346’s Parent Teacher
Association (PTA) hosted their end of the year carnival much to the
delight of the children.
The smell of freshly popped popcorn, strawberry cotton candy, and
sweet blueberry shaved ice were among the many delicious aromas
that wafted throughout the entire PS 346 playground during their
annual carnival extravaganza. All of the children were able to eat
these snacks for free along with play a host of games and participate
in activities which the PTA says is thanks to several local sponsors
including: BJ’s, Armando’s Pizza, City Fresh, CVS Pharmacy, and
Golden Crust.
The PTA also pitched a handful of pinstriped tents with games such
as a bean bag toss, test your aim by knocking down cans and more.
Winners were given tickets, which they could use toward a variety of
toy prizes.
The students danced and laughed together as they awaited their
turn to jump inside of the bouncy castle or climb up an inflatable
slide. There was also a face painting station, creating the perfect
carnival ambiance for all to enjoy.

Spring Creek After School Program Students Create their Own Stickers
By: Pamela Stern
Ms. Jackie’s 4th and 5th graders in the Spring Creek After School
program had Mr. Ruddy a guest artist visit with them on May 30th.
The students were assigned a project where they were able to
design their very own customized stickers.
This assignment allowed the children to engage in an activity
where they were able to think outside of the
box and use their own creativity. This
permitted the students the opportunity to
showcase their own personality and
interests onto sheets of paper, which would
eventually develop into stickers.
Mr. Ruddy passed out sticker paper to all
of the students and instructed them to draw
a character/things that represent who they
are, this will turn into their very own sticker
creation. They used color pencils and
markers to finalize their work and to add
color. The students then handed them to
Mr. Ruddy, and he would place a clear
sticky sheet over the drawings, so he can
cut them out. Once they were cut out, the
students had their very own stickers that
they created.

On Sunday, June 4th blue and white flags with a Jewish star on them were flying
high as marchers, floats, and bands took part in the 75th Israeli Parade down 5th
Avenue from 57th Street to 75th Street from 11am to 4pm in New York City.
This year’s theme of the parade was Israel at 75; Renewing the Hope. This
milestone parade was family friendly and featured a variety of kosher food vendors,
Jewish and Israeli crafts, and activities for children.
This year’s Grand Marshal was Harley Lippman, CEO of Genesis10, an IT
consulting firm. Lippman does a lot of charity work. He is the sole financial
proprietor of an orphanage with approximately 40 children in Cambodia for more
than 17 years. He has put 19 of these children through college.
Lippman is also a regular commentator on national TV (CNBC, Fox Business,
MSNBC, NTD News, OANN and others) regarding issues related to the Middle East,
US politics, and the economy.
