Detailed Lesson Plan in General Mathematics

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

1. Evaluate function;
2. Solve problem involving function;
3. Develop cooperation during discussion and group activity.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: “Evaluating Functions”

III. Learning Activities

A. Preparatory Activities
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
1. Prayer
(Lead by the teacher)
“......... Amen.”
1.1 Greetings
“Good morning class”
“ Good morning, Sir!”
2. Checking of Attendance
“l will check first your attendance, say present
if your name is called”

“ Very good no one is absent today”

3. Review
“ Class let us have a short review for our past
lesson.”

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Questions:
1. “It is called the relation where each
element in the domain is related to
only one value in the range by some
rule.” (student raising their hands)

“Dela Cruz do you have an idea?”

“It’s a function sir”

“Very good!”
2. “What is the set of all possible values
that the variable x can take?”

“Garcia.” (student raising their hands)

“Very good” “ It is the domain sir.”

5. Motivation
“Now, let us have an activity called a function
machine. The class will be divided into three.
Each group will be given materials needed in
this activity (manila paper, marker and tape).

Listen to the mechanics.

I’ll be presenting a function machine and a

set of input to be processed in the machine.

Every member will help each other to find the

output in the given machine. The first group
to write and raise the correct output will gain
1 point.
The group that will have the highest score will
be the winner.

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

1. If 7 goes into the machine, what

number comes out? 1. 2(7)+5=19
2. If 13 goes into the machine, what
number comes out? 2. 2(13)+5=31
3. If -4 goes into the machine, what
number comes out? 3. 2(-4)+5=-3
4. If 1 goes into the machine, what
number comes out? 4. 2(1)+5=7
5. If 2 goes into the machine, what
number comes out? 5. 2(2)+5=9

“Very fun right? What value have you

developed while doing the activity? “The value that I developed is coopration sir.”

“Very good, why is cooperation very “It is important because it can help us to finish
important in performing an activity?” the activity successfully”

“Exactly”
B. Development Activity

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

“ What have you observed from the function
machine activity?”
“ We substitute the given input to the variable
x to determine the out.”
“Great idea. The activity earlier has
something to do with our lesson for today
which is Evaluating Functions.”

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

“Think the functions as a function machine,
evaluating a function is analogous to
providing our machine a valid input.”

“In short, we substitute the given value of x to

evaluate the value of f(x) or the y.”

“Let us have an example. Evaluate the

function y=2x+1 if the value of x is equal to
2.”

y= 2x+1 = 2(2)+1 = 5

“ In the given function substituting x=2 the

value of y of function of x or f(x) = 5.”

Another example:
Evaluate the function if x=4
y= (2x+2) / (8-x)

“Any volunteer to solve this on the board?”

“ Yes, Manalo.”
(student raised their hands)

y=(2x+4) / (8-x)
y= [2(4)+4)] / (8-4)
y= (8+4) / 4
y= 12/4
y= 3
Therefore the value of y= 3.
“Very good, Any question or clarifications
about evaluating functions?”

“ None so far sir.”

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

“Alright, let’s have a a short seatwork, get ¼
sheet of paper, evaluate the give functions.
You have 5 minutes to do the activity.”

Seatwork:
Given f(x)=2x^2 -3x+1, find the following
values :
1. f(3)
2. f(6)
“Are you done?”
“Yes sir.”
“Okay pass your paper”

“Let us answer your seat work”

“Any of you want to answer it on the board?” (Students raised their hands.)
1.)
“ Yes, Guzman answer no.1 and Balili answer f(x)=2x^2 -3x+1
no.2” f(x)=2(3)^2 -3(3)+1
f(x)= 2(9)-9+1
f(x)= 19-9+1
f(x)= 10
therefore , the value of f(3) is 10.

2.)
f(x)=2x^2 -3x+1
f(x)=2(6)^2 -3(6)+1
f(x)= 2(36)-9+1
f(x)= 72-9+1
f(x)= 64
therefore , the value of f(6 ) is 64.

“ Very Good, how about the others, did you “Yes sir!”
solve it correctly?
“Excellent, do you have any questions?” “ None sir.”

“Again, how can you evaluate a function

given the value of x?” “By substitution sir.”

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

“ Precisely, since there are no questions

or clarifications from you, prepare ½
sheet of bond paper for our 15 minutes
quiz.”
IV. Evaluation
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
Directions: On a ½ sheet of paper
answer the following question.

Let f(x)=x^2 -3x+2 a.) b.)

a.) x= 0 b.) x=1 c.) x=2 f(x)=x^2 -3x+2 f(x)=x^2 -3x+2
f(x)= (0)^2-3(0)+2 f(x)=(1)^2-3(1)+2
f(x)= 0–0 +2 f(x)= 1–3 +2
f(x)= 2 f(x)= 0

c.)
f(x)=x^2 -3x+2
f(x)= (2)^2-3(2)+2
f(x)= 4–6+2
f(x)= 0

Let f(x)= √(x-3) a.) b.)

a.) x= 7 b.) x=19 c.) x=39 f(x)= √(x-3) f(x)= √(x-3)
f(x)= √(7-3) f(x)= √(19-3)
f(x)= √(4) f(x)= √(16)
f(x)= 2 f(x)= 4

c.)
f(x)= √(x-3)
f(x)= √(39-3)
f(x)= √(36)
f(x)= 6

V. Assignment
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
Direction: Copy the following on ½ sheet
of paper, answer the functions given.

1. 4x + 2y = 5
a.) x=2 b.) x=1 c.x=0 a.) x=2
4x + 2y = 5
4(2)+2y=5
8+2y=5
2y= 5-8
2y=-3
(2y/2) = (-3/2)
y= -3/2

b.) x=1
4x + 2y = 5
4(1)+2y=5
4+2y=5
2y= 5-4
2y=1
(2y/2) = (1/2)
y= ½

c.) x=0
4x + 2y = 5
4(0)+2y=5
0+2y=5
2y= 5
2y=5
(2y/2) = (5/2)
y= 5/2
