SESSION 1

TOPIC: PATTERNS, ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE AND SERIES

Learning Objectives

1. Generate Pattern
2. Define arithmetic sequence
3. Determine arithmetic means and the nth term of an arithmetic sequence
4. Determine the sum of the terms of a given arithmetic sequence

Activity 1: What’s after me?

Guess what the next term on the given pattern is.

1. J, F, M, A, J, J, ___, _____, _______

2. 3, 6, 9, 12, _____, _____, _______
3. 1, 4, 9, 16, _____
4. 100, 70, 40, 10, ____
5.

Sequence is a set of numbers or figures based on a pattern or rule.

Term is the member of the sequence.

Ellipses is the three dots used to indicate that the sequence goes infinitely.

Activity 2: Defining Arithmetic Sequence

Define arithmetic sequence based on the given examples.

1. 11, 15, 19, 23

2. 3, 5, 7, 9
3. 2, 5, 8, 11
4. 5, 9, 13, 17
5. 20, 25, 30, 35
Activity 3: Next Term is?

Give the terms being asked on the following items.

1. Is 5, 12, 19, 26, … an arithmetic sequence? If yes, what is the 15 th term of the sequence?
2. Is 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, …. an arithmetic sequence? If yes, what is the 20 th term?
3. Is 0, 12, 24, 36, …, an arithmetic sequence? If yes, what is the 10 th term?
4. Is 7, 9, 11, 13, … an arithmetic sequence? If yes, what is the 12 th term?
5. Is 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, … an arithmetic sequence? If yes, what is the 7 th term?

Arithmetic Sequence formula: a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d

Other examples:

1. In an arithmetic sequence, the first term is 4 and the common difference is 3. Which term is
301?
2. Given the following sequence 22, 30, 38, 46, 54, … what is the 21 st term?
3. Find the next three terms in the arithmetic sequence -4, 5, 14, 19.
4. Find the 110th term of the sequence 5, 9, 13, …
5. Find the 23rd term of the sequence 19.5, 19.9, 20.3, 20.7, …

Activity 4: Find my Sum!

1. Determine the sum of the first 10 terms of the arithmetic sequence 4, 15, 26, 37, …
2. Determine the sum of numbers from 1 to 100.
3. Determine the sum of the first fifteen terms of the arithmetic sequence 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, ….
4. Determine the sum of all even numbers from 2 to 200.

Arithmetic Series is the sum of terms of an arithmetic sequence.

n
sn= ¿
2

Activity 5: Find my Mean!

Determine the arithmetic mean between the given numbers.

1. 8 and 30
2. 16 and 35
3. 9 and -9
4. 49 and 7
5. 5 and 13

Arithmetic means are the terms between any two non-consecutive terms in an arithmetic ssequence.
Test Your Knowledge

1. . Compare the two patterns. What is similar between the two? What is different?
Pattern one: 2, 4, 6, 8, …
Pattern two: 12, 9, 6, 3,…
2. Find the common difference for each arithmetic sequence.
a. -34, -28, -22, -16, …
b. 15, 10, 5, 0, …
c. 0.9, 0.5, 0.1, -0.3, …
d. 12, 22, 32, 42, 52, …
e. 3, 8, 13, 18, …
3. The following numbers are the start of an arithmetic sequence with common difference -20.
Find the next four terms in the sequence. Explain how you found your response.
25, 5, …
4. Barrett says a common difference that’s a negative means the sequence is decreasing. Is he
correct? If so, explain. If not, give a counter example.
5. Find the 23rd term of the sequence: 19.5, 19.9, 20.3, 20.7, ….
6. A side of an apartment building is shaped like a staircase. The windows are arranged in columns.
How many windows are in the tallest column if the apartment building has 15 columns?

7. Trevor is volunteering with an organization called Rock the Vote to help members of his
community register to vote. On the first day, Trevor’s team helped 26 community members
register and pledge to vote in the upcoming election. Every day after the first, they help 3 more
people register and pledge to vote. How many community members will be registered to vote
after 25 days?
8. Gino is planning a big birthday party for his friend Angelina. He needs to rent enough tables for
all of the guests. 1 square table seats 4 people. When 2 square tables are pushed together it
seats 6 people. How many people would 3 square tables that are pushed together seat? Show or
explain your reasoning.
9. Create your own arithmetic sequence with a common difference of 4.5. List at least 3 terms.
Explain how we know your sequence is an arithmetic sequence.
10. This month Juanita listened to 12 new songs on Spotify because she wants to expand her music
collection. She decides that she will listen to 15 new songs every month. How long will it take
Juanita to listen to at least 500 new songs?
