SYNOPSIS

Part I. Situation/Scenario/Setting

The pandemic has touched many students with heightened stress, disruptions and remote
learning hurdles, but experts say it may have the greatest impact on the young learners,
especially those in the formative years of learning to read. Due to the health protocols mandated
by the government to prevent the spread of covid-19, the physical learning (in-person classes)
had been suspended. The lack of physical interaction could pose real challenges. This is because
learning to read is an inherently social activity. Also, when children attend school in person, most
reading instruction happens between teachers and other students. That’s why, this research is
conducted on improving the ‘Reading Comprehension’ skills of learners, most of those who are
incapable of expressing syllables, words, sentences, and even a single paragraph. Rates of slow
readers in the class of Grade 2 – Wisdom, at Solana Elementary School, Jasaan, Misamis Oriental
has been uprising – since there is no physical interaction in the school among learners and
teachers. Thus, leading into the implementation of the best means possible to enhance the
reading comprehension skills of Grade 2 Wisdom learners amid the pandemic. The class of Grade
2 Wisdom implemented a program called ‘ReCAP’ (Reading Comprehension Alternative Program).
This program aims to alternate the traditional face-to-face reading comprehension practice and to
embrace the so-called new normal learning. ReCAP is implemented through the use of video-
conferencing platforms such as: Facebook Messenger, Google Meet, Zoom, etc. However, to
practice equity among all learners so that no one would be left behind, this program also made
initiatives to those who lack capabilities with the use of necessary technologies, and those who
lack means of access with internet. They were provided with printed reading materials such as
printed stories, books, reading flashcards etc. to be distributed to/collected by the parents at the
school.

Part II. Findings and Insights

At first, the program was indirectly brought to success due to some inevitable
circumstances. Among all the 31 learners, only 12 of them participated in the program via
Facebook Messenger conference. It had been concluded, that majority of learners don’t have
access to technologies such as: mobile phones, tablets, laptops among others; and also, the
unavailability of internet connections; especially those who live in far-flung areas hence the lack of
signal reach in the area. That’s why most of them won’t be able to take part in the program.
However, most students were guided and taught by their parents with the provided reading
materials, and luckily, their reading skills also made a huge progress. after 3 months of
observation since the implementation of the “ReCAP”, it has been perceived that 6 out of 10
learners of grade 2 wisdom class, practiced and showed enhanced reading comprehension skills.
This strategic program in which at first was experimental – became effective for the
learners, teachers and especially to the parents. This enhanced the working relationship and
partnership between the school and its respective parents. The means through video-conferencing
and the use of reading materials became a collaborative and engaging work for the learners and
their parents which enhanced a closer family bonding and relationship that leads to the effectivity
of the new normal education.
Part III. Summary

The ability to read and comprehend are essential skills for students to survive and
understand how society works because most information are presented through text. Prior
research shows that reading helps mental development. This study focused on improving the
Reading Skills through the implementation of ReCAP for learners in Grade-Two Wisdom at Solana
Elementary School, Jasaan, Misamis Oriental. The Covid-19 pandemic has greatest impact on
young learners, especially those in formative years of learning to read. Grade 2 Wisdom class
implemented a very special program called ‘ReCAP’ (Reading Comprehension Alternative
Program). ‘ReCAP’ is implemented through the use of video-conferencing platforms and made
initiatives to those who are incapable by providing them with reading materials. This enhanced the
working relationship and partnership between the school and parents. Despite all the odds
encountered during the execution of the initiated program, a good amount of efficiency had been
brought to light. After 3 months of observation, it has been perceived that 6 out of 10 learners
among grade 2 wisdom learners practiced enhanced reading comprehension skills. The program
concluded successfully.
