CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM
INTRODUCTION
Writing and composition are essential tools for literacy and education.

Composition and writing allows people to convey ideas, feeling, emotions, opinions,

political views, arguments, and many other forms of communication.

Writing is an activity or action in which people transfer knowledge and ideas.

Writing has now become a huge part of every student’s life, starting with the simplest

content to the most complex writing pieces. Students need to develop their cognitive and

analytical skills to improve their writing. This includes learning to understand and think

better. Composition Writing is creating and managing a written paper or an essay on a

topic in a field of study. Composition helps writers recognize quality writing and develop

their convincing writing skills.

As writing is considered to be on important part of one’s education especially

these in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences, it goes without saying that may

students still struggle to matter this skill and commit certain error.

Each student may face different challenges in learning writing. All the students

are special and unique in their own ways. These challenges will somehow pull back the

students from moving forward to produce a good piece of writing

Lack of vocabulary has caused the students to face challenges in acquiring writing

skills claimed Misbah et al. (2017). Vocabulary is the fundamental element in

constructing sentences which is the core of effective writing skills Asep (2014). Students

almost use spoken and written words every single day to communicate their ideas, beliefs

and feelings with people around them. Good vocabulary repertoire can help students to
speak or write to deliver their thoughts. Usage of electronic dictionary and more reading

activities can help students with limited vocabulary.

Poor spelling is another cause of anxiety for students in learning writing skill and

this is supported by Nyang’au Benard (2014). Having good ability in spelling will lead to

positive learning of writing skill. If the students are struggling with spellings, it will hold

them back to move forward. The students have the habit to spell according to their

pronunciation and this will lead to wrong spelling as mentioned by Afrin (2016).

In Padre Garcia Integrated National High School specifically in Grade 11 HUMSS

students, many students do not meet the set expectation in composing writing. After all,

these common errors happen when the students try to write something that is beyond their

current level of learning process language, and in this case, the students are unable to

correct themselves because they are unaware of their inaccuracies. Through this kind of

research, the student can cope with and understand the subjects that they find hard.

Identifying the problem of the students does not give shame to every student that

undergoes but it gives them the courage to have and to maintain well in writing.

The researchers got very much interested in determining the common errors

committed by the students in composition writing so they conduct this research.The

researchers personally experience the effects of common errors and they are aware of

their impacts on other people. Taking into consideration the essence of understanding this

phenomenon, they are encouraged to conduct this study. They are heartened to determine

the effects of common errors committed by Grade 11 HUMSS students in Padre Garcia

Integrated National High School. After assessing these variables, this study might help to

address the problems encountered by the students.


The purpose of this study is to determine the common errors committed by the

students in composition writing with Grade 11 HUMSS students in Padre Garcia

Integrated National High School. Identifying the common errors in writing by the

students is a great contribution to knowing the weak points of every student that may

vary their writing abilities. Plus this study will measure, analyze, and interpret every data

to know the errors committed by every student.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the Common Errors encountered of Grade 11

HUMSS students in Padre Garcia Integrated National Highschool.

Specifically, it gave answers to the following questions:

1.To what extent do the Grade 11 HUMSS students commit errors in terms of:

1.1 Punctuations Marks

1.2 Capitalization

1.3 Spelling

2.How may the findings of the study utilized in the creation of Strategic Intervention

Materials?

3.What are the factors that contribute to the error commission in composition writing

onto the students respondents ?

Scope, Delimitation, and Limitation of the Study


The study focuses on the common errors and the enhancement of writing skills as

perceived by Grade-11 HUMSS students in Padre Garcia Integrated National

HighSchool. This study focused on determining and examining grammatical errors

such as punctuations marks, capitalization, spelling of the students and determining the

effectivity of a developed intervention material that aimed to progress the writing skills

of Grade 11 HUMSS students in Padre Garcia Integrated National High School.

Significance of the Study

This research which discusses Common errors committed by Grade 11 HUMSS

students in “Composition Writing in Padre Garcia Integrated National High School:

Foundation for the creation of Strategic Intervention Materials” will benefit the

following:

STUDENTS. Knowing those common errors has been established to help academically

unprepared students.. The proposed study will give relief to students who are more often

to activities, or even evaluations to acquit them about the possible actions and capability

of the actions. Through this study, they will come up with their predicaments situation of

academically prepared students.

TEACHERS.The result of this study was somehow, useful for teachers, as they instantly

recognize the students’ difficulties in constructing or composing sentences in English .

PARENTS.This study would give parents a better understanding of why their child

faces difficulties or struggles in composition writing.


RESEARCHERS. They would gain more knowledge about the chosen topic. Through

this research, there would be a chance for them to build up their expertise and improve

their writing skills.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS. The proposed study will serve as their guidelines for

creating a new study related to this research. This study would help the student

researchers to be aware and knowledgeable of the processes that are involved in this

study. This research will be a big help for them to analyze the research problem better

and can be their future reference for their upcoming research the future.
