This module will explain the differences of a trend from a fad, a two concept
that are commonly mistaken synonymous. Identification of the elements and
describing the characteristics of a trend will also be discussed. Explaining the
process on how to spot a trend will also be included.
After going through this learning material, you are expected to attain the

1. A temporary event, usually called as a “flash
in the pan.”

long period of popularity.
In this part you will have more knowledge and understanding in the
topic. Have time to read and understand!
Typically, fads last for a total of one season, but they can also last for less
than a month. Fads are novelty driven fashion choices. A fad is often referred to as
“catching on” with the larger population, but will often fade as quickly as it
appeared. The easiest way to remember a fad is through a simple alliteration: fads
fade. Although engaging in fads can be fun, they are often not worth investing a
large amount of money or time. Its appeal among consumers is relatively small as
well. To put it simply, a fad has a shorter staying power in the market.
Lesson 2. Process of Identifying a Trend
Characteristics of a Fad
For additional inputs and insights try to apply and recall what you
understood in the DISCOVER part and apply it in the following activities.
Directions: Think of a product that you consider as a trend and fad. Take/copy a
photo of these products and paste it on the concept map on the next page
(duplicate the concept map) and explain why the product is a trend or fad.

sources like photographs, advertisements, commercials, and other promotional
materials as examples to show the development of this trend in the Philippines.
