The BJP traces it's roots to the Bhartiya Jan sangh it was established in 1955 as the political wing of the pro Hindu group Rashtriy Swayamsevak Sangh RSS by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. The BJP was finally established in 1980 , following a split by dissidents within the Janata coalition under the leadership of Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani and Murali Manohar Joshi. The symbol of the party is a Lotus flower on a saffron coloured flag . The BJP advocated hindutva (Hindu Ness) and ideology that sought to define Indian culture in terms of Hindu values it was highly critical of the secular policies and practices of the Indian National Congress. The official ideology of the BJP is ‘integral humanism’( Ekatma Humanism) first formulated by Deen Dayal Upadhyay in 1965. The party expresses its commitment to Hindutva and its policy has historically reflected Hindu nationalist positions. The BJP advocate social conservation and the foreign policy centre on nationalist principles. It’s key issues have included the abrogation of the special status to Jammu and Kashmir Rammandir in Ayodhya and implementation of a Uniform Civil Code. According to the party Hindu is a cultural nationalism favouring Indian culture over westernization, thus it extends to all Indians regardless of religion. Although initially unsuccessful— winning only two seats in the 1984 general election, it grew in strength on the back of the movement around Ram Janmabhoomi in Uttar Pradesh. Following victories in several state elections and better performances in national elections, the BJP became the largest political party in the Parliament in 1996; however, it lacked a majority in the lower house of Parliament, and its government, under its then- leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee, lasted for only 13 days.After the 1998 general election, the BJP- led coalition known as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) under prime minister Vajpayee formed a government that lasted for a year. Following fresh elections, the NDA government—again headed by Vajpayee— lasted for a full term in office; this was the first non-Congress government to do so. Narendra Modi, then the chief minister of Gujarat, led the party to a landslide victory in the 2014 general election. Modi has since led the NDA government as Indian prime minister, including being re-elected in the 2019 general election. As of December 2022, the alliance governs 16 Indian states and union territories.
In terms of economic policies specially
from BJP majority hold in elections followed strongly new liberal agent, presented as a drive towards development with focus and health care and agriculture. Compare to the Congress, the BJP takes a more aggressive and nationalistiIc position on defence policy and terrorism like that of that of the pulwama attack or its strong position towards terrorism in International sphere Hindu nationalism combined with Economic growth. Though there has been quite some differences in the conduct of Foreign affairs on the part of the Modi government as compared to Vajpayee government. Modi's Foreign policy is currently focused on improving relations with neighboring countries in South Asia, engaging the extended neighbourhood in Southeast Asia and the major global powers with ACT EAST policy, LINK WEST policy, SAGAR and the like.
