Volume of Solid Figures

Directions: Identify the figures below.

After doing the tasks in Activity 1, reflect on the following questions. Write your
answer on the space provided for.

1. How did you recognize the solid figures?

2. What is the topic all about?

Solid figure is a three-dimensional figure that has length, width and height.
Because they have a three-dimensional, they have depth and take up spaces in our
universe. A solid figure is identified according to its features that are unique in each
type.

 Volume of Prisms
The volume (V) of a prism is the product of the base area (B) and height

5
(h).
V=Bxh
Since B= L x W, then V = l x w x h
Example:

Find the volume of the refrigerator at the right.

Solution:
The refrigerator at the right is a rectangular prism.
6m
Using the formula, V = l x w x h, we have:
V=lxwxh
= 3m x 2m x 6m
V = 36 m3
Thus, the volume of the refrigerator is 36 m3.
3m
 Volume of Pyramids 2m
1
The formula for the volume of pyramid is the base area (B) times the
3
height (h).

1 1
V = x B x h or V = x l x w x h
3 3
Example:

Find the volume of a pyramid at the right 50 m

Solution:
1
V= xlxw xh
3
1
V = x 62 x 40 x 50
3
1
V = x 124 000
3 62 m 40 m
3
V =41 333.3 m

So, the volume of the pyramid is 41 333. 3 m3 .

 Volume of Cones

6
1
The formula for the volume of cone is the base area (B) times the height
3
(h).

1 1 2
V = x B x h or V = x πr h
3 3

Example:
Find the volume of the cone at the right. 2 cm

1 2
V = x πr h
3
1 2
V = x 3.14 x 2 x 5
3
1
V = x 3.14 x 4 x 5
3
h = 5cm
1
V = x 62.8
3
3
V =20.93 cm

 Volume of Spheres
4
The volume of sphere with the radius (r) is π times the cube of the
3
radius.

4 3
V= π r
3
Example:
Find the volume of the sphere at the right.
Solution:
4 3
V= π r
3
4 3
V = x 3.14 x (50)
3
4 50 m
V = x 3.14 x 125 000
3
4
V = x 392500
3
3
V =523333.33 m

7
So, the volume of the sphere is 523 333.33 m3 .

 Volume of Cylinder
The volume (V) of a cylinder is the product of the circular base area (B)
and the height (h).
6 cm
2
V =π x r x h

Example:

Find the volume of coffee in this mug at the right. 12 cm

`Solution:

2
V =π x r x h
2
V =3.14 x 6 x 12
V =3.14 x 36 x 12
3
V =1356.48cm

So, the volume of the sphere 1356.48 cm3

The relationships between:

 Rectangular Prism and Pyramid – the relationship between the volumes of
pyramids and prisms is that when a pyramid and prism have the same base and
1
height, the volume of the pyramid is of the volume of the prism.
3
 Cone and Cylinder – the relationship between the cone and cylinder is that the
volume of a cone means the third part of the volume of a cylinder having the
same base and the same height.
 Cylinder and sphere – the relationship between the volume of the cylinder and

8
2
sphere is that the sphere takes up to of the volume of the cylinder.
3

Directions: Determine the relationship between the following volume of solid

figures.
