About the DAV


The DAV is a non-profit association which exists to promote debate by providing accessible
education workshops, training programs and competitions to school students and teaching staff
in Victoria. The DAV is an inclusive and flexible employer.

About the role


The Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) wishes to appoint an administrator for an initial, fixed
term, 23-week contract starting in July 2023 and ending December 2023.

The Office Administrator will be paid a total salary $9,752 plus superannuation. This is equivalent
to $26.50 per hour plus superannuation.

The Office Administrator will work 16 hours per week, which can be spread across 2-4 days per
week. At least one day per week must be completed from the DAV’s Office in Melbourne’s CBD
but work from home arrangements can be negotiated. Normal working hours are between 9.00
AM and 5.00 PM. Occasional Sunday shifts will be required as part of the role to support program
delivery.

While working in this role, you will also accrue sick leave and annual leave on a pro-rata basis (at
the rate of 4 weeks of annual leave and 2 weeks of sick leave per year).

The primary tasks and responsibilities are to:


• administer the Primary Schools Debating Program; by liaising with host schools, securing
a venue for the end of year tournament, coordinating and providing information for
trainers, and organising adjudicators;
• organise Regional Debating Competitions outside metropolitan Melbourne;
• administer all aspects of the Schools British Parliamentary Competitions (3 Sunday
tournaments in term 3 and 4)
• plan and coordinate DAV Debate camp, a 2-3 day program run in the September school
holidays;
• manage updates to the DAV website and database;
• attend monthly meetings of the Executive and other meetings as notified;
• perform general office duties; and
• work as directed by the Executive Officer and the wider DAV Executive.

In managing Primary Schools, Regional, and British Parliamentary Competitions, the Office
Administrator is responsible for advertising, registering schools and computing draws, tallying
results, and for maintaining the database of records and communicating with teachers and
debaters throughout the year.

The role reports to the Executive Officer and works closely with a small team of other
administrators.
Who should apply
There are no restrictions on who may apply, so long as you have full working rights in Australia..
Naturally, enthusiasm for debating and experience in
administration and customer service are advantageous. Applications are encouraged from
people who are:
• professional in their attitude;
• interested in education and in working in a non-profit association;
• able to work effectively with school students, teachers, parents, the Executive and others;
• able to write and speak professionally;
• able to use computers efficiently – basic word processing and spreadsheet management
skills are required, and experience in custom databases and website administration
would be advantageous;
• organised and disciplined.

The successful applicant will be required to hold an employee-class Working with Children Check
(the DAV can assist with applying for this).
