What if you are on a foreign jaunt and lose your passport or credit card? What if you misplace insurance documents and fall sick? Are you prepared or will you panic? Here is a list of five such eventualities and ways to exit them with minimal damage. 1 ...You lose your passport. What to do: Contact the Indian embassy or consulate in the country you are visiting and they will issue a temporary passport. To dispense with the panic-ridden legwork in locating the embassy, carry the consulate's telephone number and address with you. These can be accessed for all the Indian embassies at india.gov.in/overseas/embassies.php . Mumbai-based Viresh Patnaik did not know this when he was holidaying in Barcelona, Spain, in 2007. The 43-year-old lost his wallet with his credit card and cash, but it was immediately replaced by Amex . "The next day at the airport, I lost my passport as well. So I used the replacement card to get a ticket to Madrid, where I had a temporary passport issued by the Indian embassy," he says. Make sure you have a copy of the passport scanned and stored in your e-mail in order to
get the new one. Don't forget to: Take the telephone number and address of the Indian embassy in the country you are visiting, passport size photos and photocopies of the passport. 2 ...Your credit/travel card is stolen or blocked. What to do: The first remedial measure begins at home. Call up the bank/credit card issuer and inform them of the impending trip. Not only will you find out if there is a special transaction fee for using the card overseas butwill also get the local contact number for the country you are visiting. Store it in your phone or e-mail, and if you lose the card, just call the bank. It will block the card and arrange a quick replacement from the local office. Carry internationally acceptable cards or ones from global banks, which have large networks, for instant replacement. Informing the bank also minimises the chances of the card being blocked because the company usually stops the funds fearing fraudulent spending. In case of a travel card, offered by most leading banks, the replacement is simpler as most come with international helpline numbers, which give a swifter, cost-free access (48 hours) to the duplicate card. Another good option is to avail of the card protection facility offered by CPP Assistance Services , which is affiliated to nine leading card issuers and helps in case of theft or loss anywhere in the world. "A call to the international helpline number blocks all cards simultaneously and also facilitates payment of hotel bills or travel tickets. It even offers group coverage for all cards," says Gagan Maini, CEO, CPP India . Don't forget to: Store the global helpline numbers for your credit/travel card issuer; 24x7 numbers for Visa ( visacemea.com/lv/global_dir.jsp ) or MasterCard ( mastercard.com/au/personal/en/cardholderservices /emergencyservices/index.html ); and CPP card protection helpline number ( 91-921244-4000 ).
