the carabao
There are symbols such as the carabao (national animal), mango (national fruit) and
anahaw (national leaf) that are widely known as national symbols but have no laws
recognizing them as official national symbols.
TAMARAW:
Originally widespread across the island of Mindoro, the tamaraw has suffered from
heavy hunting and continuous habitat destruction during the last century. It has
gradually been confined within the mountainous interior of the island. The species
is now listed as Critically Endangered on theIUCN Red List of threatened species.
The Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi), also known as the monkey-eating eagle
or great Philippine eagle:
The Philippine Eagle is one of the largest eagles in the world. Endemic to the
Philippines, the species is Critically Endangered with over half the remaining
nesting pairs found in unprotected forest on Mindanao Island.
Philippine tarsier:
Primate
The Philippine tarsier, known locally as mawumag in Cebuano and other Visayan
languages, and mag� in Waray, is a species of tarsier endemic to the Philippines.
It is found in the southeastern part of the archipelago, particularly on the
islands of Bohol, Samar and Leyte.
Philippine tarsier is one of the world�s most endangered primate.
The IUCNe lists Philippine tarsiers as Near Threatened (IUCN, 2015), appearing on
the IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species.
