Ending plastic pollution:
People alone can’t
make a difference
World Environment Day, which falls on 5 June every year, is perhaps
the largest environment-related movement in the world that brings
together millions of people, engaging them in the effort to protect and
restore the Earth. This year’s celebrations, which fall today, marks a
special milestone as this is the 50th World Environment Day the world is
observing.
The theme of this year’s celebrations is, ‘Solutions to Plastic Pollution’ –
a recurring theme regarding a menace that has begun to open the eyes of
States worldwide as of late. Just like the shelf life of plastic, the plastic
pollution and issues regarding plastic are a slow burner. For years, the
world was blinded by the convenience of plastic and decided to overlook
the long-term consequences of plastic use since the common conception
was that plastic was a neutral material that possesses no real harm, other
than taking a longer time to decompose. It is this quality of plastic which
made it the ideal material to be used in the packing industry, especially in
food packing. Not only plastic, polythene and Styrofoam don’t necessarily
mix with the food they also ensure airtight packing which is essential to

which was made in China months ago and then imported to Sri Lanka, and
find solace in knowing that it would not lead to any real health concerns.

Growing Geostrategic Relevance

This makes plastic the ideal material for many industries and many
aspects in our social lives. True, even if we know plastic to be this neutral
material, no one would take it as a green light to actually consume it, and
