Having no street light while you are walking or traveling on the road side at night is

dangerous. There has a lot of car accident, crimes, that is happening to our community

because of the shortage in street light. Street lighting plays a critical role in helping prevent

car accidents, even if it’s something most drivers don’t usually think about.

Without adequate lighting, it’s much more difficult for drivers to see potential hazards on the

road, road signs, other drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Additionally, bad lighting can

exacerbate certain driving hazards. Streetlights are required to be placed in a way that’s

beneficial instead of harmful.

Street light

A Street light is a raised source of light on the edge of the road or path. Street lighting

provides a number of important benefits. It can be used to promote security in urban areas

and to increase the quality of life by artificially extending the hours in which it is light so that

activity can take place.

Street lighting also improves safety for drivers, riders, and pedestrians. Driving outside of

daylight hours is more dangerous only a quarter of all travel by car drivers is between the

hours of 7pm and 8am. Period accounts for 40% of fatal and serious injuries to the same

group .Pedestrians and vulnerable road users suffer from decreased visibility in the dark too.

For these reason, ways of reducing the risk to all road users during the hours of darkness must

be found.
Academic interest in the relationship between street lighting and crime began in the 1960s in

North America amid a backdrop of escalating crime rates. Initially, studies concerned with

the crime reduction effect of improved street lighting showed promising effects (Wright et

al. 1974).

Objectives
A source of light that is mounted on a lamp column or pole either on the side of the road or

within the median to provide illumination is known as street lighting. Street lighting is

required along the road to have safer, comfortable, convenient and efficient movement of

vehicles at night.

The main objectives of providing and maintaining road lighting are to improve road safety,

Reduce the incidence of night time crime, Improve the perception of street safety and

security, To make the obstructions on the road clearly visible in order to promote safety and

convenience, and to increase the community value on the streets.

Conclusion
Theft from vehicle offenses reduced in streets where street lighting was switched off at

midnight but may have been displaced to better-lit adjacent streets. Relative to daytime,

night-time theft from vehicle offenses reduced in streets with dimming while theft from

vehicles at all times of the day increased, thus suggesting temporal displacement. These

findings suggest that the absence of street lighting may prevent theft from vehicles, but there

is a danger of offenses being temporally or spatially displaced.
